 Joint Aviation Authorities - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The JAA is not part of, nor is it affiliated with, the European Union, although the JAA aims to eventually become part of the EU umbrella as a new European Aviation Safety Agency.
It is roughly equivalent to the Federal Aviation Administration in the USA in that its primary concern is air safety, followed by the viability of the aviation industry.
It is associated with the European Civil Aviation Conference, and JAA membership is open to all members of the ECAC.

 EC proposes new powers for air safety agency - JAMAICAOBSERVER.COM
EU Transportation Commissioner Jacques Barrot asked that the European Aviation Safety Agency be put in charge of regulating airplane checks, preflight preparations, emergency action plans and pilot licensing for all 25 EU countries.
The European Aviation Safety Agency was created in 2002 to set safety norms related to aircraft design, manufacture and maintenance for the bloc.
Barrot also proposed that the agency - based in Cologne, Germany - take charge of overseeing airplane safety checks on non-European airlines that fly in Europe.

Blakey said the consolidated safety index would be a "much broader metric" than has been issued by the agency before, and will be calculated from a wide range of factors, including runway incursions, turbulence injuries and general aviation accidents.
Peggy Gilligan, deputy associate administrator-regulation and certification, said the index will be like "the Dow Jones of aviation safety" and will give the public and industry a way to judge the health of the system.

 EASA calls for UAV airspace rules co-ordinating body-18/01/2006-Flight International
The European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) is calling for the creation of a body to co-ordinate introduction of routine un­mannned air vehicle operations in the continent’s controlled airspace.
The agency says the co-ordination role – which it could theoretically undertake itself – needs to be formalised at a pan-European level because of the complexities involved.
EASA is seeking input on whether this should be based on impact energy considerations developed specifically for UAVs or the redefinition of safety objectives for manned aircraft by creating new weight categories.

The TCCA shall notify the Agency prior to issuing an Export Certificate of Airworthiness in which a non-compliance to the Agencies approved type design is to be noted under the "Exceptions" section of the Export Certificate of Airworthiness.
