European Baptists have strongly criticised moves in the Southern Baptist Convention, the biggest Protestant grouping in the United States, to quit the Baptist World Alliance on the grounds that the alliance is too liberal.
The recommendation has is to be considered by the Southern Baptist Convention's executive committee in February, by its assembly in June, and, if approved, will take effect in October.
In its statement, the European Baptist Federation's executive committee said Baptists in Europe and the Middle East were "deeply hurt" by the proposal and it expressed full support for the world alliance.

But to suggest the BWA is unfaithful to the great doctrines of Baptist life or uncertain about the facts that Jesus is the way of salvation and the Bible is true and trustworthy and authoritative for Baptist life is simply false.
World Baptists still desire a continued relationship with Southern Baptist churches, and Denton Lotz has made it clear that all Southern Baptists are welcome to come to the BWA centennial celebration in England in 2005.

An effort by the Texas Partnerships Center to fund indigenous church starts in Europe is gaining momentum, according to reports from Theo Angelov, general secretary of the European Baptist Federation.
The Baptist General Convention of Texas, through its partnership missions program, is funding 14 of the 23 church starters.
In April, the European Baptist Federation appointed Polish Baptist pastor Daniel Turisewicz coordinator of the international partnership.
