The European Biomass Association is a non profit Brussels based international organisation whose mission is to represent bioenergy at EU level.
Biomass refers to renewable energy coming from biological material such as trees, plants, manure, and sometimes waste.
Using various transformation processes such as combustion, gasification, pyrolysis the biomass is either transformed into biofuels, bioheat or bioelectricity and used for energetic purposes.

According to the report, biomass provides a cost-effective and carbon-neutral source of energy that could provide 15% (from the current 1%) of the electricity demand from industrialized countries by 2020.

 WWF-UK: Alternative fuel will reduce CO2 emissions
A report by WWF and the European Biomass Industry Association (AEBIOM) shows that using biomass - fuel derived from agriculture and forest waste - instead of coal to generate electricity, could reduce carbon dioxide emissions by about one billion tonnes.
According to the report, the UK currently generates 0.9 per cent of its total generating capacity from biomass, an equivalent of 648 megawatts of electricity, enough to provide for approximately 750,000 UK homes.
"Decision-makers have overlooked the huge potential of biomass to deliver sustainable energy for the future, and it is a viable option for Tony Blair's government to meet its commitment to source 10 per cent of the UK's total electricity from renewables by 2010," says Dr Catarina Cardoso, head of WWF-UK's Climate Change Programme.

In spite of the large world-wide biomass resource potential and the optimistic long-term, contribution (World: 7'800 MTOE/y- E.U. 400 MTOE/y), it can be stated that commercial bio-energy production is not yet initiated, with the exception of the heat production, mainly concentrated in Scandinavia and Austria (biofuel contribution ~18% of total primary energy).
As far as the improvement of crop productivity is concerned, we are still at an early stage compared with agricultural crops.
In particular the use of biomass as a substitute for fossil-fuels to mitigate the CO2 effect will be effective and more beneficial from the socio-economic (rural development) perspectives than sequestering the carbon in forests.
