The seven-car shortlist for the European Car of the Year award has been announced: the Alfa Romeo 159, BMW 3-Series, Citroen C1/Peugeot 107/Toyota Aygo (treated as one model), Mazda5, Renault Clio, Toyota Yaris and Volkswagen Passat.
To be eligible, a car has to be on sale in five or more European countries by November 2005, and to be capable of selling over 5000 a year.
The ECOTY is decided by a jury of journalists from 22 countries, including 4car's John Simister; each juror has 25 points to award to at least five cars on the shortlist, and can give up to 10 to an individual car.

The car looks almost exactly like the Clio II, and although it has undoubtedly been improved and is a terrific little machine, its technology is as derivative as its looks.
Last year, it looked liked the COTY jury had turned the corner when it crowned the Toyota Prius, the ground-breaking and brave design from Japan, which gave us the petrol-electric hybrid engine.
But last year, the Prius was such a strong candidate, even these guys realised that another Fiat or Renault would reduce the prestige of COTY to a joke.

This is recognised as the highest honour award for European cars.
Comment: traditionally favours small cars and does no justice to premium and sports cars, but European COTY is still the most recognized award around the world because it has the best cars involved.
