UEFA Champions League - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The UEFA Champions League (known colloquially as the European Cup) is an annual club football competition organised by the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) for the most successful football clubs in Europe.
The UEFA Champions League is not to be confused with the UEFA Cup, the secondary championship for European club teams.
The UEFA Champions league is open to the league champions of all UEFA member associations (except Liechtenstein, Andorra and San Marino), as well as to the clubs finishing from second to fourth position in the strongest leagues.

European Super Cup - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The European Super Cup (UEFA Super Cup) is at stake in an annual football game between the reigning champions of the UEFA Cup and the Champions League.
It takes place at the start of the domestic season, in August, and though it could be viewed as the ultimate European club championship decider, it is generally regarded as a minor event, with the Champions League and UEFA Cup winners not always fielding their best players and not at top fitness levels.
Since the beginning of the 1999/2000 season, the European Super Cup has been contested between the respective winners of the UEFA Cup and Champions' League.

 The European Cup
Former French International and newspaper editor Gabriel Hanot had the idea of the European Champion Clubs' Cup after reading in an English newspaper an article claiming that Wolverhampton Wanderers were the champions of the world, following success in friendly matches against Spartak Moscow and Honved of Hungary.
So in 1855 Hanot invited the twenty leading European clubs to Paris to discuss his idea, which was given overwhelming approval.
Thus the competition was born with the champion club from each European Country competing on a home and away basis with the winner on aggregate going on to the next round, climaxing with a one off final.

European Cup History and Previous Winners
Europe's premier club competition was launched exactly one month after UEFA's first-ever Congress, held in Vienna on 2 March 1955 yet, curiously, the so-called "European Cup" was not a UEFA initiative.
The tournament initiated by L'Equipe did not stipulate that the participating teams had to be champions of their country, but they invited clubs who they considered the most fan appeal.
The major turning point in the evolution of the competition came in the 1992/93 season when the UEFA Champions League, involving a group phase in addition to the traditional knock-out elements, was officially inaugurated after a pilot group stage during the previous season.
