 Champions' Cup Trivia
Atlético de Madrid hold another record: they are the only club who have won the Intercontinental Cup against the winners of the Copa Libertadores, in spite of not (and indeed never) having won the European Champions' Cup in the previous season, when they beat Independiente as stand-ins for Bayern München in 1974.
If the winner of the Champions' Cup doesn't win its domestic league, the country in question gets two representatives, and this has occasionally led to meeting between clubs from the same country.
All other Champions' Cup winners finished among the first 3 of their national championship with the exception of Nottingham Forest (5th in 1979/80), Liverpool (5th in 1980/81), Juventus (6th in 1984/85) and Real Madrid (4th in 1997/98 and 5th in 1999/2000).

The history of the European Cup and Champions League is long and remarkable, with fifty years of competition finding winners and losers from all parts of the continent.
However, until 2005 if the Champions League winner was from a country that was entitled to send four clubs to the competition, it was not assured of entry unless it was in the top four.

Whilst UK Athletics fully appreciates this, we would draw clubs attention to the "composite teams" rule, which is designed to help clubs join forces in league and cup competition.
UK Athletics had planned to phase the introduction to the new rule by making first year Under 17's (15 year olds) ineligible to compete in senior cup and league competition during the 2003 season.
Having listened carefully to the objections UK Athletics has decided to change the phasing in process and introduce the rule changes at the beginning of the 2004 track and field season, at which time all U17 athletes will be excluded from participating in senior cup and league competition.
