CNN/SI - European Champions League - Dynamo hopes history repeats itself against Bayern - Wednesday April 07, 1999 11:36 AM
As well as the Super Cup matches, Dynamo and Bayern have played four other matches against each other in Europe, with Kiev winning a European Cup quarterfinal 2-1 on aggregate in the 1976-77 season and Bayern winning two Champions League matches in the 1994-95 season 1-0 and 4-1.
Dynamo, holder of the European Cup Winners' Cup, beat European champions Bayern Munich-- in the second year of its three-year reign as European champions-- home and away with a 1-0 win in Munich and a 2-0 win in Kiev.
Even Shevchenko, who leads all goalscorers in European club competition this season with nine, has been without a goal in his last three matches after scoring at least once in his six previous games.

Kempes' record in Spanish football is impressive too; two Spanish Cups, two European Cup-Winners Cups, one European Super Cup, and twice leading goalscorer in the Liga, first in 1976/77 with 24 goals and again in 1977/78, with 28.
El Matador was to play in three FIFA World Cup finals (Germany 1974, Argentina 1978 and Spain 1982), making a total of 18 appearances.
Kempes scored two of his side's goals, the first in the 38th minute of the first half, and the second, after one of his typical strong, gutsy runs, in the 15th minute of extra time.

Since then the Nerazzurri have played 7 matches, registering 5 draws and 2 defeats, and thus beat the club's negative record set between 1974 and 1977 when they recorded three draws and three defeats in the two-legged ties against Amsterdam (1973/74 Uefa Cup), Honved (1976/77 Uefa Cup) and Dinamo Tbilisi (1977/78 Uefa Cup).
A 0-0 draw in the first legs of European cup competition matches is often a good omen for the Nerazzurri, who have only been knocked out on two occasions: against Gothenburg in the 1986/87 Uefa Cup and in last season's Champions League semi-final (both 1-1 draws in the return legs).
Inter haven't won a European game since 30 September when they beat Dynamo Kiev 2-1 at the San Siro.

Rangers were eliminated in the first round of the 1976-77 European Cup by FC Zurich, drawing 1-1 at Ibrox and losing the return leg 1-0 in Switzerland.
His Scottish Cup record is more attainable but is still a stiff target to overhaul as McNeill played at a time when second and third replays were common as opposed to now with just one replay permitted before penalties decide a tie and no replays at all in the Final.
In McNeill's day there was a minimum of six League Cup matches per season and it took at least ten games to win the trophy as opposed to just one guaranteed game and a minimum of four to win it now.
