European Environment Agency (EEA), agency of the European Union devoted to establishing a monitoring network for the monitoring of the European environment.
As a EU body, member states of the European Union are automatically members; however the Council Regulation establishing it provided that other states may become members of it by means of agreements concluded between them and the European Community.
It is governed by a Management Board composed of representatives of the governments of member states, a European Commission representative and two scientists appointed by the European Parliament, assisted by a committee of scientists.

The European Environment Agency is the main source of information used by the European Union and its Member States in developing environment policies.
Established by the EU in 1990 and operational in Copenhagen since 1994, the EEA is the hub of the European environment information and observation network (EIONET), a network of some 600 bodies across Europe through which it both collects and disseminates environment-related data and information.
The European Union has delivered on its long-standing commitment to stabilise emissions of carbon dioxide (CO) - the main "greenhouse" gas responsible for man-made global climate change - at their 1990 level by 2000, despite an emissions upturn in the final year of the period.

The European Topic Centre on Terrestrial Environment (ETC-TE) is one of five Topic Centres designated by the European Environment Agency (EEA) for the period 2001 - 2003 to assist in its work of collecting, analysing, evaluating and summarising information relevant to national and international policies for the environment and sustainable development.

Christian Noyer, vice-president of the European Central Bank, said on 17 January that the ability of candidate states to meet the Copenhagen criteria would predetermine, to a large degree, their subsequent preparations to adopt the euro.
