Green Parties are part of, but do not exclusively represent, a larger political movement to reform human governance to better fit the constraints of the biosphere — usually called the Green movement to contrast it from the electoral participation of the legally-registered Parties.
Green Parties are often formed in a given jurisdiction by a coalition of scientific ecologists, community environmentalists, and local (or national) leftist groups or groups concerned with peace or citizens rights.
Green Parties in Italy and France are part of the political pendulum and return to government with the success of the main parties of the left.

The Green movement encompasses the Green parties of various countries, and relies on the ideals of the larger ecology movement, peace movement, conservation movement, environmental movement and general trend towards environmentalism.
Not all political ecologists or "Greens" are necessarily active in parties or Green politics.
Greens also often support traditional "left" socialist or "right" capitalist parties as part of a Red-Green Alliance or Blue-Green Alliance or to achieve some tactical purpose.

Leading green party members, including Zhvania, became involved in creating a political platform for former Soviet foreign minister Edward Shevardnadze to assume Georgia’s leadership after the civil war of the early 1990s and the deposition of the nationalist administration that had taken over from the communists.
The Georgian party system is, however, in complete flux again after the present CUG leader and former Green Party leader Zhvania resigned first as party chairman and then as president of parliament in 2001.

The European Federation of Green Parties is an umbrella organization of green parties in Europe.
Since the change of statutes on February 21, 2004, the European Federation of Green Parties can, apart from member parties, also have individual members, but this is rather rare.
Prior to the founding of the European Greens, EFGP was one of the two subgroups in the Greens-EFA group in the European Parliament.

European Green parties Sunday formally signed an act of union creating a cross-frontier environmental party that will contest elections for the European Parliament on a common platform in June.
Environmental parties from seven countries that will not be part of the enlarged EU -- Bulgaria, Georgia, Norway, Romania, Russia, Switzerland and Ukraine -- are also members of the new group.
The new party aims to greatly enlarge the Green presence in the parliament, which holds monthly assemblies in Strasbourg, France.
