 British Garden Birds - Greenfinch
The Greenfinch (or Green Linnet) is a large stocky finch with a distinctly forked tail.
The Greenfinch has declined in farmland areas owing to changes in farming practices, such as autumn sowing which means there are no stubbles in the winter, and hedge flailing, which is increasingly used in preference to more expensive alternative hedgerow management methods, removes many of the seeds that they would otherwise eat.
The numbers of Greenfinches peaked during summer 2000 when adults were accompanied by the juvenile birds and fed on sunflower seeds.

Birder's World Community - Lexington Michigan, can you help me identify this unique bird??
Birdwatchers in Manitoba, Quebec, and New Brunswick as well as Michigan have reported European Goldfinch, Eurasian Jay (a bird that I was happy to help identify after a visitor to this website e-mailed us a photo), Common Chaffinch, European Greenfinch, Eurasian Linnet, Blue Tit, and Great Tit.
On it, she asks birders (including you, barnhart1997!) who have seen a European Goldfinch or other European cage bird in the Upper Midwest or northeastern states to send her an e-mail with dates, location (please include city, county, state), and whether at a feeder or in natural habitat.
The consensus is that some of the European birds may be true vagrants, but most of the finches are either imported or propagated (legally) in the United States.

 Farm and forest birds decline
The first genuine biodiversity indicators of their kind, which are published today at an EU event in Brussels, paint a mixed picture of how the European environment is changing.
On average, common forest birds such as the Marsh Tit Parus palustris and Wood Warbler Phylloscopus sibilatrix have also declined over the same period by 13% — however the factors causing these declines are less easy to pinpoint.
In contrast, birds which require less specialist habitats such as the Great Spotted Woodpecker Dendrocopos major, Eurasian Jackdaw Corvus monedula and European Greenfinch Carduelis chloris have increased on average by 28%.
