AutomatedBuildings.com Article - Building Automation with LCN
The bus signals are carried in buildings either on a separate signal cable in addition to the the power cable or they are incorporated into the power lines using signal modulation techniques.
Bus modules have power outputs to drive electrical loads (with dimming) and have sensor inputs to be connected to a large variety of plug-and-play sensors to reach the goal of the automation project.
EIB stands for European Installation Bus and is a trademark of the European Installation Bus Association which has been merged into the Konnex Association (http://www.konnex-knx.com/)

 HiddenWires - EIB Explained
EIB (European Installation Bus) is one of the best-kept secrets in the UK's electrical installation market, but a growing army of integrators, installers, smart home enthusiasts, and users are finding it impossible to ignore.
EIB is different - it delivers flexibility of aesthetic design in an open standard that handles, amongst others, lighting, heating, blind and audio control as a part of its native language.
Every EIB device, be it an actuator in a panel, or a thermostat on a wall, contains a 'bus coupler' that is connected to the 'green wire' which typically is daisy chained from one device to the next.

 EIB Technical Bulletin -
The European Installation BUS (EIB) is a distributed control system with each device having its own intelligence and able to respond according to its own device type and the way it is programmed.
EIB can therefore be used both in small installations (flats) and large projects (hotels, administration buildings, …;.).
Telegrams from the EIB from switches and sensors are received by the UCM/EIB which update Counters in Comfort corresponding to the data.

Overall we believe that the EIB technology is well adjusted to the electrical installation industry in Germany and surrounding countries and to the smaller building arena.
EIB training appears to be very well integrated with the training of installers and planners in Germany – less well so elsewhere – and has led to a wide understanding of the technology.
The very powerful installation tools, and their associated cost base, may require revision for smaller installations if they are to be seen as cost-effective.

Using RS-485/RS-422 Transceivers in Fieldbus Networks - Maxim/Dallas
A maximum bus length of 400m is allowed between any two slaves, and the total bus length is limited to 13km.
The maximum bus length for copper cables at 12Mbit/sec is 100m, but at lower data rates the use of repeaters can extend the total bus length to 9.6km.
When bus nodes are powered up or plugged into a "hot" backplane, there follows a short interval in which the processor or control ASIC executes its power-up sequence.

Until now, lighting control systems with a high level of user convenience have been based on digital installation bus systems, such as European Installation Bus (EIB, an embedded control for smart homes and buildings), the French Batibus (a twisted pair control), the European Home Systems (EHS) specification and Echelon's LON networks.
Although these bus technologies can meet many of the requirements, they are often actually designed for much more complex tasks in buildings than mood lighting and can be cost-intensive.

Group messages on the network are captured and the values saved in a table within the interface; other devices can then access these values.
The interface must be configured with a list of up to 128 group addresses; the interface then monitors the EIB network for messages to these groups, and stores the value in its table.
The EIB interface supports values from single bits to 32-bits, and from dimming-levels to IEEE floating point values.
