The Social Democratic Party (Portuguese: Partido Social Democrata) is a political party in Portugal.
The Democratic Alliance was dissolved in 1983, and in parliamentary elections that year, the Social Democrats lost to the Socialist Party.
Economic liberalization and tax cuts ushered in several years of economic growth, and early elections held in 1987 resulted in a landslide victory for the PSD, who captured 50.2 percent of the popular vote and 148 of the 250 parliamentary seats - the first time that any political party had mustered an absolute majority.

It is a member of the European Liberal Democrat and Reform Party (ELDR), which is a constituent part of the Alliance of Liberals and Democrats for Europe (ALDE).

Liberal International advocated the enlargement of the Community at its Congress in Oxford in 1967 and, at its Congress in Munich in 1969, it was the first body to come out in favour of direct European elections.
The Federation of Liberal parties in the EC was finally set up on the 26th and 27th of March 1976 by the delegations from nine parties and the Liberal Group in the European Parliament, after four years of preparatory work.
Following the European elections in Spain and Portugal in the summer of 1987, two members of the Convergentia were elected as were ten members of the Portuguese Democratic Party.

It DOES have something to do with a great discontent with their leaders who will not address the inordinate amount of freedom allowed that results in a drastic increase in crime, and the absence of laws to cover these crimes.
