In accordance with the European election law, the mandate of a Member of the European Parliament arises at the opening of the first session of the European Parliament in the new five-year term of office of the European Parliament.
Elections to the European Parliament are also governed by the Act of 20 September 1976 Concerning the Election of the Representatives of the Assembly by Direct Universal Suffrage (European Election Act).
In accordance with the Treaty of Accession of the Czech Republic, twenty four Members of the European Parliament are to be elected on the territory of the Czech Republic.
