  European Left - Some remarks concerning the creation of the Party of the European Left
Many parties of the transforming European Left, after a phase of difficult reorientation of their politics after the upheavals of 1989/90, had reached the conclusion that it was high time to build up a more concrete collaboration, so as to convey a common profile to this European Left.
For many Left-wingers an important upcoming date are the European elections, which for the Left forces also raise the challenge of defending their place as influential force in their respective countries.
The European Left is critical of capitalism and anti-capitalist and aims at a transformation of societies beyond the rule of capital;

The European Union or EU is an international organisation of European states, established by the Treaty on European Union (the Maastricht treaty).
Major issues concerning the European Union at the moment include its enlargement south and east (see below), the European constitution proposed by the Convention, the Union's relationship with the United States of America and participation in the Euro by those member states currently outside the Eurozone.
The original impetus for the founding of (what was later to become) the European Union was the desire to rebuild Europe after the disastrous events of World War II, and to prevent Europe from ever again falling victim to the scourge of war.

 What does the European Parliament do and how do European Elections work?
The European Parliament's main role is to analyse and amend all EU legislation, firstly through its committees and then in the full session.
Information about the elections can be patchy and it can be difficult to find out what powers the European Parliament has and how it affects and influences the lives of blind and partially sighted people here in the UK.
European elections are quite different to national or local elections in that instead of small local constituencies, the UK is divided into twelve larger regions.

 1994 British Elections to the European Parliament
Looking at the results of the British elections to the European Parliament in detail, as set out in the table on the next page, one notices that the overall results in terms of seats won by each party give a highly distorted impression of party support.
Overall the outcome of the 1994 European election was the most distorted and least representative election result in recent British electoral history.
One serious consequence of the British result, which tipped the balance in the new Parliament too far tot he left, was that the Parliament as its first act, (and initiated by British Labour MEPs), attempted to block the appointment of Luxembourg's prime minister, Jacques Santer, as president of the European Commission.

The upcoming election for the European Parliament appears, in many respects, less like one European-wide election than 25 parallel elections in each member state.
Rather than identifying clearly discernible patterns running across the whole of the European Union, we find different trends emerging in different countries in the principal aspects of the elections: namely campaign issues, likely voter turn-out, the kinds of candidates whose names will appear on the slates and the eventual outcome.
While the actual outcomes of the election are bound to prove our findings wrong in one or another respect, they do indicate some interesting trends that in the end do not hinge on the predictions being exactly right for one country or the other.
