The Semi-collared Flycatcher, Ficedula semitorquata, is a small passerine bird in the Old World flycatcher family.
This is a 12-13.5 cm long bird, intermediate in appearance between Collared Flycatcher and European Pied Flycatcher.
Semi-collared Flycatchers are birds of belts of deciduous woodlands, especially Oak and Hornbeam, in mountainous areas.

The African race, Ficedula hypoleuca speculigera, and Ficedula hypoleuca iberiae of central (A parliamentary monarchy in southwestern Europe on the Iberian Peninsula; a former colonial power) Spain have a larger forehead patch and a pale rump.
It is therefore a much earlier spring migrant than the more aerial (Common European woodland flycatcher with grayish-brown plumage) Spotted Flycatcher, and its loud rhythmic and melodious song is characteristic of oak woods in spring.
The very similar Atlas Flycatcher, Ficedula speculigera, of the mountains of north west (The second largest continent; located south of Europe and bordered to the west by the South Atlantic and to the east by the Indian Ocean) Africa was formerly classed as subspecies of Pied.

Pied Flycatchers are smaller than Spotted Flycatchers, and have shorter bills and tails.
The eggs of the Pied Flycatcher are about 18 mm by 13 mm in size, are smooth and glossy, and pale blue.
Pied Flycatchers have not been seen in the neighbourhood, but a good place locally is Padley Gorge on the National Trust's Longshaw Estate (near Hathersage, Derbyshire).

Pied and Semi-collared have migrated a short distance before starting the moult, but usually no further than 100-300 km (and these are often failed breeders).
The flycatcher is a male in breeding plumage.

The rainy conditions were really against us, though we did see Pied Flycatcher and a Golden Oriole briefly responded to our whistles, allowing some to see him.
European Turtle Dove: 1 at the Wólka Piaseczna meadow on 14th was our only sighting.
[European] Sand Martin: Noted on 4 days with small numbers from bus at one spot on 10th, 20 on 11th, many at Dojlidy Fishponds and SIE on 14th and 15th.

There had been recent heavy rain which might have encouraged birds to visit the nest site - 5 birds were already there when we arrived at around 16.30; the other crew arrived a little earlier and had to wait an hour for one to appear (with the bonus of a Forest Francolin).

There were many herons and egrets (great views of both color phases of Western Reef Egrets) along with several waders in the shallow areas.
Other birds in the area were Little and White-throated Bee-eaters, Pied Kingfisher, and African Grey Parrots.
We had a nice vantage point of the forest canopy on top of the rock, but it was almost lunchtime and not much was moving.

Il vicino Frassino ahimè è più o meno vuoto: solo 3-4 germani e 6 morette, qualche airone cenerino e un AIRONE ROSSO.
Lake Frassino is not far away, but unfortunately it's more or less empty: just 3-4 Mallards and 6 Tufted Ducks, a few Grey Herons and one PURPLE HERON.

The walk-boarded area and that around the zoo was a fascinating insight into the mature mixed forest, which dominated the area.
Wryneck, Pied Flycatcher and Great Spotted Woodpecker were seen by all, but a Hazel Grouse eluded most of us.
Woodlark, Hawfinch, Red-breasted Flycatcher, Wood Warbler and Coal Tit song filled the forest whilst Corncrake was heard and Corn Bunting seen in the meadow surrounding the hotel.

Thus, it largely depends on the season, on the amount of time spent at the river and on your good luck, whether you get to see Shining-blue Kingfisher, Giant Kingfisher, Jacana, the occasional Mosque Swallow and Ussher’s Spinetail, African Fish-eagle, Senegal Thick-knee, Goliath Heron or Yellow-billed and Woolly-necked Stork.
Other birds will almost certainly be there, no matter where exactly you go, like Pied Kingfisher, White-headed Lapwing, Little Green Heron, Hamerkop and at most times African Pied Wagtail.
The Cataracts are generally one of the best spots to see the Fish-eagle and Goliath Heron, and it’s the only place where I ever saw Rock Pratincoles, though their presence seems to be confined to the rainy season.

We left the cave filled with wonder and drove as far as the "lavogne" in Drigas where I saw a Rufous-tailed Rock Thrush and a European Pied Flycatcher.
The "ravers" had left Le Mas de Val, so we went there but there were not birds to see, just angry farmers.
