Rugby union: Clubs' bid for power threatens Heineken Cup | Rugby union | Guardian Unlimited Sport   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-13)
The future of the Heineken Cup could be left hanging in the balance today when a proposal from the Premiership clubs for a greater say in the running of the competition is likely to be rejected, reviving the threat of a breakaway tournament.
Premier Rugby, which represents the clubs, insists that the proposed change to the running of European Rugby Cup should be considered in isolation without the issue of player release, not least because time is pressing, with the current agreement for the competition running out at the end of the season.
That ends in May and European Rugby Cup is looking to replace it with a five-year agreement which rolls on every year, with a two-year notice period for anyone who wants to withdraw.

Rugby union is a team sport that was (according to legend) developed from the rules used to play football at Rugby School in England.
However, the trophy for the Rugby Union World Cup bears the name of "Webb Ellis" in his honour, and a plaque at the school 'commemorates' the 'achievement'.
For the next few years rugby clubs continued to agree rules before the start of each game as they had always done, but on January 26, 1871, the Rugby Football Union (RFU) formed, leading to the standardisation of the rules for all clubs in England that played a variety of the Rugby School laws.

The BBC is thought to have been in talks with the competition's organiser, European Rugby Cup Ltd (ERC), for up to a year and the corporation was joined in the summer by Channel 5.
The World Cup is currently being shown on ITV and, without the Six Nations, Sky would only have held a domestic portfolio of England's autumn internationals at Twickenham - and there is none this year because of the World Cup - and the rights to the Zurich Premiership rugby.
The Heineken Cup has gone the other way but the ERC thinking is that its competition has commanded such interest that it can tolerate being available to a smaller audience.

They are likely to be followed by English clubs as they had announced earlier in the week that if French sides went through with their threat they would also not play in next season's tournament.
Their decision came despite a last minute offer from FFR president Bernard Lapasset offering French clubs 15.66 percent shareholding in the ERC till 2009, which would have given the English clubs time to resolve their differences with the Rugby Football Union (RFU) as that is when their present contract runs out.
However many in the RFU, including director of rugby Rob Andrew, share the view that the French are using it as a smokescreen and their real reason is fixture congestion following the World Cup which they are hosting in September and October.

 European Rugby Cup : History
The 10th anniversary season of European club rugby’s premier tournament turned into a triumph for coach Guy Noves — who has guided Toulouse to that unique treble in 1996, 2003 and 2005 — and captain Fabien Pelous.
The tense final in Edinburgh on 22 May, 2005, failed to produce a try even though extra time was needed to separate the great rivals with Toulouse centre Yannick Jauzion taking the man of the match award in front of a crowd of 51,326.
Wasps’ victory denied Toulouse the honour of being the first club to win the Heineken Cup crown three times — albeit only delaying that honour for another 12 months — the French giants having become only the second team to win the title twice when they added the 2003 title to their 1996 crown.
