The European School in Culham, Oxfordshire, is one of 9 European schools around Europe and the only one in Britain and currently has around 900 primary (5-12 years old) and secondary (12-18 years old) students.
The European School at Culham primarily hosts children whose parents work at nearby international scientific institutes such as the Harwell International Business Centre and the Joint European Torus (also in Culham).
All the European Schools offer a unique secondary qualification called the European Baccalaureate which requires students to take 11 subjects, all of which are weighted equally for the final mark (given as a percentage, where 60% is a pass).

Friend said, there are considerable strategic advantages to the country in having a school that can cater for the children of distinguished scientists and business folk of all kinds, from all over the world, who want to send their children to an international school with an international ethos of the kind that Culham provides.
I hope that the Minister will agree that Culham school is a good institution, and that in the name of diversity, choice and excellence, it falls to her as much as to anybody to try to keep it going.

In connection herewith, the Commission recalls that according to Article 1 of the Convention defining the Statute of the European Schools, the primary purpose of the European Schools is to "educate together children of the staff of the European Communities".
In the case of Culham, the Italian section had, for the year 2003/2004, 23 pupils in primary school, down from 33 pupils the year before, and 51 pupils in secondary school, compared with 50 pupils the year before.
The Commission points out that none of the pupils affected by the decision are children of EU staff while the primary purpose of the European Schools is to educate children of the staff of the European Communities.
