European Super Cup - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The European Super Cup is at stake in an annual football game between the reigning champions of the UEFA Cup and the Champions League.
It takes place at the start of the domestic season, in August, and though it could be viewed as the ultimate European club championship decider, it is generally regarded as a minor event, with the Champions League and UEFA Cup winners not always fielding their best players and clearly not at top fitness levels.
Since the beginning of the 1999/2000 season, the European Super Cup has been contested between the respective winners of the UEFA Cup and Champions' League.

They had qualified for the European Cup Winners' Cup as a result of winning the Scottish Cup the previous season, and impressively knocked out Bayern Munich, who had beaten Tottenham Hotspur 4–1 in the previous round.
Aberdeen had also performed well in the league that season, and retained the Scottish Cup with a 1–0 victory over Rangers, but Ferguson was not happy with his team's play in that match and upset the players by describing them as a "disgraceful performance" in a televised interview after the match.
With 90 minutes on the clock they were 1-0 down to Bayern Munich at the Nou Camp in Barcelona thanks to a Mario Basler free kick, but in 3 minutes of injury time allowed by referee Pierluigi Collina, Teddy Sheringham, a substitute, equalised and extra time looked certain.
