The European Free Trade Association (EFTA) was established on May 3, 1960 as an alternative for European states that were not allowed or did not wish to join the European Community (now the European Union).
Three of the EFTA countries are part of the European Union Internal Market through the Agreement on an European Economic Area (EEA), which took effect in 1994.
However, during the negotiations for the EEA agreement, the European Court of Justice informed the Council of the European Union by way of letter that they considered that giving the EU institutions powers with respect to non-EU member states would be a violation of the treaties, and therefore the current arrangement was developed instead.

The Association Agreement Between Tunisia and the European Union Finance & Development - September 1996
For the EU, the agreement with Tunisia is part of a broader strategy aimed at deepening the EU's relations with its southern neighbors, with the objective of building a Euro-Mediterranean Economic Area.
The Agreement goes well beyond the existing framework of cooperation by calling for a comprehensive harmonization of the regulatory framework, with a view to phasing out any practices that distort trade between the partners, such as monopolies, government subsidies, or privileges granted to public enterprises.
The Agreement is likely to have a profound impact on the Tunisian economy, although both the sectoral changes it is likely to produce and their precise timing are difficult to predict.

CYPRUS PROBLEM: Cyprus Towards the European Union
As had become apparent, a simpe trade agreement could not remedy the situation in the long run; it was therefore preferable to find a formula for some eventual permanent customs union with a sizable and stable market, such as the European Community.
Association with the EEC would provide the necessary interest in develoments in that part of the world.
In signing the Customs Union Agreement, the European Community reaffirmed its support for the legal government of the Republic of Cyprus, for the independence, sovereignty, and territorial intergrity of the country and for the need for a solution to the Cyprus problem based on the relevant U.N. resolutions.

The European Coal and Steel Community shall have as its task to contribute, in harmony with the general economy of Member States and through the establishment of a common market as provided in Article 4, to economic expansion, growth of employment and a rising standard of living in the Member States.
An economic union, as distinct from a common market, combines the suppression of restrictions on commodity and factor movements with some degree of harmonisation of national economic policies, in order to remove discrimination that was due to disparities in these policies.
Of course, the European Community is not just a new power-bloc or a new coalition, although it has its pride, it is not a swollen version of 19th century nationalism, taking a continent rather than a country as its basis.
