Topic: European Watershed

Watershed Encyclopedia Article, Information, History and Biography @ NaturalResearch.org   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-05)
A watershed is a region of land where water drains downhill into a specified body of water, such as a river, lake, sea, ocean or wetland.
In the Thiessen polygon method, the watershed is divided into polygons with the rain gauge in the middle of each polygon assumed to be representative for the rainfall on the area of land included in its polygon.
The Caribbean Sea watershed consists of all of the American interior (the Louisiana Purchase, the western Mississippi River watershed; as well as the eastern half such as the Ohio River and its tributaries); eastern Central America; and far northern South America.

European Watershed - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The European Watershed is the line which divides the drainage basins of the major rivers of Germany; the Rhine river, which originates in the European Alps and empties into the North Sea via Holland, and the Danube River, which originates in the Black Forest and flows eastward emptying into the Black Sea.
The European Watershead is not a clearly defined divide, however, since the Rhine's level is much lower than the Danube's, and subsurface rivers carry much water from the Danube watershed to the Rhine watershed.
Since this enormous amount of underground water erodes much of its surrounding limestone, it is estimated that the Danube upper course will one day disappear entirely in favor of the Rhine, an event called "stream capturing".

The watershed today is known to be a degraded urban ecosystem but was once heralded as a thriving natural and commerical resource in it's earlier history.
The watershed has undergone many changes through the years, mainly due to the influence of urbanization on the ecosystem.

 About our watershed
A watershed encompasses the area of land where all of the water that is under it or drains off of it from the land goes into a particular body of water.
The watershed is bordered by the West Branch of the Susquehanna on the north, the Susquehanna River on the east, the Potomac River to the south and the Ohio River to the west.
The western boundary of the watershed (its headwaters) is the Allegheny Front, which separates rivers that flow eastward towards the Susquehanna River and the Chesapeake Bay from the rivers that flow westward towards the Ohio River and eventually the Mississippi (USACOE, 1995a).

GWMG: Grand River - land use and settlement
Early watershed residents relied on the river as a source of drinking water, transportation, and power, and a means for disposal of wastes.
While the watershed is considered urban, most of the population lives on a small percentage of the land, while the rest of the watershed is largely rural in nature.
The central part of the watershed is the most densely populated, with the urban cities of Kitchener, Waterloo, Cambridge, and Guelph accounting for the majority of the residents.

The first European settlers of the Maitland watershed were principally English, Irish, and Scottish, with fewer of immigrants of German and French decent [3].
The Maitland watershed is located in an area of moderate (40 to 80 animal units per 100 hectares) to high (80 to 120 animal units per 100 hectares) livestock density [10].
Moderate concentrations are found closer to Lake Huron, in the western portion of the watershed, with higher concentrations in the eastern portions (Perth and Wellington counties) [10].

Unasylva - No. 88 - Impact of forest land use on floods
Valid data from large watersheds is rare, due mainly to difficulties in the measurement of independent variables, and to the heterogeneous nature of soils, vegetation and land use.
A statistical (multiple regression) analysis of peak flows from 54 watersheds, ranging in area from 5.7 to 7,280 square miles (14.7 to 18,850 square kilometers), indicated that clear-felling one square mile of forest could be expected to increase flood peaks by 100 ft³/sec/mi² (1.1 m³/sec/km²) (Anderson, 1958).
While European land and water authorities have for many years recognized the importance of upper catchment management in flood control, much of the available literature on the subject merely gives an account of the measures adopted without relating these measures to results achieved.

And, as Europeans expanded into the interior and encountered resistance, the Native Americans were viewed as troublemakers and villains, the enemy of a remote, ever-changing frontier.
While it is, of course, ridiculous to blame twentieth-century Americans for the sins of their European ancestors, Native Americans are quite justified in being incensed by the historical myopia and narrow cultural perspectives that beset current interpretations of the Day of Discovery, as well as the centuries that followed.
