 MSN Encarta - African Literature
Literatures in African languages have received little scholarly attention, in part because of a Western bias in favor of literature in European languages.
African literature in English is more extensive than African literatures in other European languages, but it generally made a later appearance than Lusophone or Francophone African literatures.
Most of Africa’s written literature is in European languages, owing to European colonization of the continent from the 16th century to the mid-20th century.

Since literature is an offspring of culture, which is formed by the history of a people, one cannot speak of something like African, Asian or European literature, because all these consist of so many different cultures.
As long as Europe is populated by at least people from 40 different cultures, using more than 40 languages one cannot speak or even think about European literature.
One can only speak of European literature when speaking in the broadest of manners.

Brazilian literature itself began, as did Spanish-American literature, as a specifically European phenomenon in the New World, with a certain inferiority complex that Brazilians, even those of European descent, were not as good as the Europeans in Europe.
The writer Clarice Lispector, another Brazilian author, was heavily influenced by European thought, and as a Jew and a woman was something of an outsider.
Joaquim Maria Machado de Assis, who wrote at the end of the nineteenth century and the beginning of this one, is often considered the greatest figure in Brazilian literature.

By combining the insights of an American and a Romanian scholar with a vision of Romanian pastoral life developed by a leading American photographer, the reader is introduced to one of the most complicated and elusive cultural icons in European civilization.
It describes the gradual transformation of an identity that was initially religious and was based upon the Romanians' membership in the international Orthodox community into one that was secular and broadly European.

It is hoped that such an interdisciplinary course will help sensitize students of German to the world of music while interested music students will have a chance of gaining greater familiarity with the German language and literature as well as European cultural history.
The course deals with 20th century Eastern and East-Central European literature and film during the period of the break down of Western civilization as a result of Nazism, the two World Wars and the attempt to build a communist utopia by force.
The course will look at phenomena in the traditional European societies approximately up to the beginning of the 20th century but it will not focus on developments related to Fascism, Communism or the post-communist period.

 Literary Encyclopedia: German Baroque Literature
Sweeping aside the non-learned literature of the previous century, Opitz based the reform on classical and contemporary forms, styles, and motifs, thereby laying the groundwork for the integration of German into the family of European Renaissance literatures.
Moreover, German Baroque literature was part of the European tradition, and as such comprised a significant body of Neo-Latin writings and foreign language translations, alongside original works in German.
Ironically, this goal would be reached by way of translations and adaptations from French, Italian, and Spanish literatures, demonstrating thereby the equality of the German language with its European counterparts.

Like his contemporary James Fenimore Cooper, Irving proved that Americans could write European literature as well as Europeans could.
For the first time, America had a significant number of men and women of letters--that is, writers who created works appreciated for their aesthetic value and who made a career or at least a serious avocation of literature.
A transitional figure, Irving somewhat ironically contributed to America's literary independence while producing work that was distinctively European in content and style.

Learn more about Esperanto in the online encyclopedia.
Esperanto has proven to be a good deal easier for speakers of European languages to learn as a second language than any national language (especially highly irregular and/or non-phonetic languages such as English, French, and Chinese).
There is also evidence that studying Esperanto before studying any other second language (especially an Indo-European language) speeds and improves learning, because learning subsequent foreign languages is easier than learning one's first, while the use of a grammatically simple auxiliary language lessens the "first foreign language" learning hurdle.
Esperanto words are more changed in orthography and endings from their etymological cognates than in some auxiliary languages.
