When a baby plaice is born, it has one eye on each side of its head like most other fish do.

The skate, a large long-tailed flatfish, is one of a number of demersal or bottom-dwelling North Sea species, including sole and plaice, that are particularly vulnerable to beam-trawling, a fishing method that involves churning up the seabed.
