Regional airlines are a type of passenger airline service that provides services to smaller communities, frequently connecting to larger cities, and is generally intended to feed a larger airline with larger aircraft.
Many of the regional airlines in the United States and to a lesser extent in Europe and the United Kingdom eventually transitioned to regional jets, notably the Embraer or Canadair designs, in the 1990s.

 AeroWorldNet(tm) - SPECIAL REPORT: ERAA 2000 [October 2, 2000]
European Regions Airline Association (ERA) executives pledged at their 20th-anniversary assembly here on September 28-29 to participate fully in industry, airport and regulatory discussions and consultations to the more than 80 member operators.
Regional airlines are vulnerable to environmental policies that might be used to increase aircraft size as a way to accommodate increased traffic, says ERA.
ERA is also fighting gaseous emissions charges, which are applied at some airports in Sweden and Switzerland and which they fear could be incorporated into en route navigation fees.

FLUG REVUE December 2002: European regional airlines under pressure
Generally speaking, the low-cost carriers appear only of limited use to business travellers, the primary target group of most regional airlines, as usually their tickets are non-transferable or else the airports used are too far out of town.
Yet, according to ERA director general Mike Ambrose, the competition from the no-frills carriers is not the only challenge facing the regionals.
Sub-charter operations were the only way for the regionals to survive, as the small airlines could not compete with the cost structures of the large ones.

The last package of measures allowed airlines of one member state to compete on domestic routes in another member state, and this, combined with earlier packages of liberalisation, has made the European airline industry a totally open market on paper, allowing full and free competition.
Airlines cannot continue to tolerate such poor performances, and Europe networks must be rationalised if airlines are to produce acceptable profits over the course of the cycle.
These "airlines within an airline" are believed to operate on cost bases around 20% lower than those of the main airline, and they are one way in which airlines can reduce costs and improve operating performances in Europe.

Are airlines still taking us for a ride?
Since 17 February 2005 airlines operating flights from EU airports and flights to EU airports on EU carriers have been legally obliged to compensate passengers for cancelled or overbooked flights and to provide refreshments and assistance if flights are delayed for more than two hours.
Andrew Clarke, director of air transport policy at the European Regional Airlines Association (ERAA), said the regulation lacked clarity, particularly on delayed flights, which would explain why so many passengers’ complaints had not led to compensation pay-outs.
If his figures are correct, airlines could soon face the compensation bills that they seem to have avoided so far, but Noorderhaven insisted it was time that people in the EU were made aware of the poor service they receive.
