Topic: Eurorealism

  East European Constitutional Review
Not surprisingly, Eurorealism is more prevalent among opposition parties that bear no responsibility for the pace and outcome of accession negotiations.
Cautious Eurorealism helps opposition forces distinguish themselves from the incumbents, provides an avenue for criticizing the government, and is part of the broader strategy of appealing to discontented voters.
The prime example of such opportunistic Eurorealism is the populist Center Party, which won a quarter of the votes in the 1999 parliamentary elections.

For them, English is a first or second language—and a symbol of their shared, cooler and very British view of Europe and its mission.
The new dichotomy is between "Eurorealism" and traditional postwar "sentimentalism," as Alasdair Murray of the Centre for European Reform in London puts it.
This is the real "new Europe," not the one that U.S. Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld stumbled upon when he sought to draw a line between European countries that supported America's war in Iraq and those that did not.

Although Klaus is known for his right-leaning politics, even the left-wing opposition party Smer welcomed the election results.
"I always admired the straightforwardness of Klaus and his incredible degree of Eurorealism, with which he was able to react to the integration processes and national interests of the Czech Republic," said Smer leader Robert Fico.
But despite considerable support in neighbouring Slovakia, the new Czech president now faces the difficult task of filling the shoes of former Czech president Václav Havel, well known abroad and popular at home.

Throw in some centre-right pro market Swedes and it emerges that Eurorealism is a pretty diverse phenomenon across the continent.
It's certainly more diverse than the suits of the European parliament's "opposing" EPP-ED and Socialist blocs, who recently voted en masse to crowbar one of their grey representatives into the top job in the parliament.

Such doubts would not be of serious concern if they were not combined with increasingly aggressive nationalist statements and attacks on the EU in general.
At a recent conference, ODS leaders warned against "eurofetishism", calling instead for "eurorealism".
They said the Czech republic needs to defend its national interests and adopt a though negotiating line vis-a-vis the EU.

In fact, the new domestic and international political context that has emerged in the last decade would ideally require a new mode of governance to be established integrating the domestic and European levels in a new way.
It is in this context that an important new ideological conflict has emerged in which Eurorealism is both weakly led and also squeezed between a largely acritical, positive Eurorhetoric on the one hand, and a demagogic, negative Eurorhetoric on the other.
Italy is a country that has been associated for long with a tendency of diffuse party-based Europhilia.

A recent poll showed around 45% of people were in favour of joining the European Union, with 20 against.
The majority of politicians may be angry with the outspoken leader of the Civic Democrats, but there is no contesting the fact that Mr Klaus's "Eurorealism" - he dislikes the term "Eurosceptic" - is shared by many ordinary people here.
But as MP Ivan Pilip points out, the Czech Republic is trying desperately to join an elite club of nations: savaging that club in public is downright foolish.

In the Czech Republic and Poland, the modified political maps showed the crystallisation of this process as anti-European political ideologies have started to play a central role in the partisan debates and the public sphere in general.
The so-called eurorealism of the former Prime Minister, now President of the Czech Republic, Vacláv Klaus concurred in the refusal of the European constitution.
The Polish left wing government fought for perceived national interests as if in a life-and death struggle until the last minute at the intergovernmental conference that completed the document (Sobotka 2004): one reason of this behaviour was the pressure of the growing popularity of the eurosceptical opposition parties.

What I call here europessimism, might be superficially interpreted as cautious eurorealism, or, from an other perspective, advocate euroscepticism.
Certainly, europessimism does not mean that Hungary should not join the Union at all.

This week the Civic Democrats sought to clarify their stance towards the EU: announcing that they were 'Eurorealists' who want the Czech Republic to be ready for any eventuality, even failure to join the EU.
Earlier today Rob Cameron asked Civic Democrat MP Jiri Payne for a more precise definition of 'Eurorealism'.
Jiri Payne: I think that real discussion about our interest concerning EU membership is right now starting.

Abandoning the attempt to turn back the clock would also dovetail with David Cameron's broader modernisation strategy.
Whether the party is ready for a `Eurorealism' that sees Britain's relationship with the EU as a `valence issue' - one revolving around competence - rather than a `position issue' - one which demands people take sides - is another matter.
Nor will things be made any easier by Cameron's arguably rash promise to take Tory MEPs out of the EPP-ED group in Brussels.

This result was heartening for all who believe that young people are not naturally pro EU and shows what can be achieved by emphasising the forward looking nature of Eurorealism, eschewing the pathetic right wing arguments which try to associate a noble cause with an agenda more suited to 1930s nationalism.
We can succeed with the young if we show them that the EU's time has past in the global village of the Internet and that it is only of benefit to yesterday's men such as Heath, Hesletine and Patten.
The extent to which Europhiles can twist the truth is sometimes almost unbelievable and, in the last few days, we have seen three prime examples of this.

Although the political summer holidays mean temporarily less exposure for the iniquities of the EU there have been several notable outbreaks of hypocrisy from federalists.
First in line was Keith Vaz, the 'Minister for Europe', with his accusations that Eurorealism in the British press is unbalanced and prevents the issues being discussed in a sensible manner.
Next to pop up was that ridiculous figure, Robin Cook, who echoed Vaz in talking about a 'grown up' debate, by which he no doubt means we should believe all the rubbish concerning the EU produced by the Foreign Office and not dare to question the received wisdom of self interested mandarins.
