Topic: Eurotiales

In the News (Mon 16 Nov 09)

  FUNGI,
The simplest forms of Euascomycetes are those, as in the order Eurotiales, in which asci are scattered throughout the interior of a ball of hyphae called a cleisthothecium.
Penicillium and Aspergillus are conidial stages of the Eurotiales.
Soil is a natural habitat for saprophytic fungi, which live on organic remains, as well as a reservoir for parasitic fungi, which infect living plants and animals.

ARS | Publication request: The Mycorrhizal Status of Pseudotulostoma Volvata (Elaphomycetaceae, Eurotiales, Ascomycota).
A recently described fungus in the Eurotiales, a large group that includes those fungi that produce the antibiotic penicillin, occurs in a tropical forest in Guyana.
The nutritional status of this fungus was unknown despite evidence that suggested that it was mycorrhizal with the dominant tree species, a large legume related to dry beans and other important crop plants.
Significantly, this is the first known association of a fungus from the Eurotiales forming a mycorrhizal symbiosis with any species of legume.

The Eurotiales are characterized by having a definite cleistothecial peridium containing globose asci with single celled often ornate ascospores.
While most teleomorph genera (those classified in the Eurotiales) have been associated with an anamorph species in the genera Aspergillus or Penicillium, there are many anamorph species in these genera which have never been associated with a teleomorph in the Eurotiales.
The taxonomy of the Eurotiales has to a large extent been developed by mycologists working on the anamorph genera and it is monographs on the genera Aspergillus and Penicillium that much work on the Eurotiales can be found.

The relationship between Paecilomyces and Penicillium was recognised early and for much of the twentieth century Paecilomyces was accepted for thermophilic species with association to the Trichocomaceae (Eurotiales).
Samson (1974) effectively split the genus into two Sections: Section Paecilomyces containing all thermophilic species with teleomorphs associated in the Eurotiales and Section Isarioidea containing the mesophilic and entomogenous species with teleomorphs suspected to be in the Hypocreales.
The objective of this study was to evaluate the taxonomic value of DNA sequence data in relation to morphological characters, host range, ecology and anamorphs in order to determine the relationship between species.

The peridium, the outer structure of the ascomata, is typically membranous in the Eurotiales and is a network of hyphae in the Onygenales.
Recently, these fungi were regrouped in the order Eurotiales, which was conceived as encompassing two suborders, Eurotinineae and Onygenineae (Eriksson and Winka, 1997).

In order to clarify the phylogenetic position of additional species of cleistothecial ascomycetes, particularly those placed in the Cephalothecaceae and Pseudeurotiaceae of the Eurotiales, partial sequences of the small and large subunit ribosomal DNAs of fourteen taxa were compared with those of other ascomycetes.
Others (species of Pleuroascus, Connersia, Leuconeurospora, and Pseudeurotium) were not closely related to perithecial ascomycetes or Eurotiales, but to discomycetes and loculoascomycetes.
The phylogeny provided in this study suggests strongly that all of these fungi are excluded from the Eurotiales where they have been placed and that they do not form a natural group.

One represented the Eurotiales (bootstrap 100%) and another the Onygenalessensu stricto (shown as Onygenales I) containing representatives of the families Arthrodermataceae (100%), Onygenaceae (96%) and Gymnoascaceae (98%).
The phylogenetic tree (Fig.1) shows that the genus is not closely related to either the Onygenalessensu stricto or the Eurotiales but forms an independent well-supported clade (bootstrap 100%).
Although the tree shows a sister-group relationship with the Eurotiales, it would be difficult to justify extending the concept of the Eurotiales to include the Arachnomyces clade.

Partial or complete substitution of the mannose, mainly at O-2, by single residues of different sugars, originates a variety of polysaccharides which may correspond to a first fungal radiation (order Onygenales).
From these polysaccharides, only the mannan partially substituted by b-D-galactofuranose seems to be the origin of chains of b-D-galactofuranose with different lengths and linkage types, which may be considered a second radiation (order Eurotiales).
The partial substitution of the O-2 of the galactofuranose residues of three different galactomannans (structures 14, 16 and 17) by glucuronic acid and other sugars or short chains may be the origin of a third radiation (order Hypocreales).
