 Eurovision Song Contest
Eurovision is the television network supervised by the European Broadcasting Union (EBU), and was established in the early 1950s to serve two functions: to share the costs of programming with international interest between the broadcasting services of member nations, and to promote cultural appreciation and identification throughout western Europe.
The Eurovision Song Contest is a long, live Saturday evening showcase of pop music talent that typically ranges from the indescribably bad, through the insufferably indifferent, to a few catchy little numbers.
In estimating the significance of the Eurovision Song Contest, perhaps less attention should be given to its bloated festivity or the derivative nature of the contenders' music.

Daz’s love of Eurovision has endeared us to him, and it makes a refreshing change to see a UK representative being so enthusiastic about the contest after the apathetic competitors we’ve fielded recently, but if he does want to make an impact next year he’s going to have to come up with something completely different.
The dust has barely settled on this year’s Eurovision and already the voices of dissent are starting to make themselves heard – the ones complaining that the whole thing is political, that everybody simply votes for their neighbours and that it’s about time the whole thing was scrapped.

The highlight for many fans is not the singing of the 20-plus songs but the voting carried out by viewers in each country, with results conveyed by local broadcasters, who invariably try to make the most of their moment in the spotlight (the UK's Colin Berry is especially guilty of this).
Some musical trends have emerged during the contest's history: love songs dominated early on; bouncy, kitsch pop songs with ridiculous titles ruled for a long time (from La La La to Diggi Loo-Diggi Ley); before soaring ballads came to the fore, thanks to a spate of Irish successes.
In the early days, Eurovision winners always went on to win a place in the British hearts and charts but that tradition ended in the 1980s, even though the contest still attracts a big audience on BBC1.
