Eurovision Song Contest 1996 - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Eurovision Song Contest 1996 was the 41st Eurovision Song Contest and was held on May 18, 1996 in Oslo.
As a leading financial contributor to the contest, Germany were particularly aggrieved that their entry, Planet of Blue performed by Leon, was one of the seven cast aside.
The 1996 contest also featured the novelty - which similarly failed to become a tradition - of a short 'good luck message' for each entry, recorded by a political leader or official from their country.

At the first contest in 1956, each country was allowed to submit two three-minute (or less) songs, performed by inhabitants of the respective country.
Following the dominance of English language songs, particularly Sweden's 1974 victory (with ABBA's "Waterloo"), a rule was passed in 1977 that the song had to be sung in one of the official languages of the performing country.
Many viewers of the contest view the event as a combination of camp entertainment and a musical train wreck (a fact played upon in the UK broadcast with the sardonic BBC commentary of Terry Wogan) and a subculture of Eurovision song contest drinking games and the like has evolved in some countries.

The Eurovision Song Contest, the self-proclaimed "Greatest Gameshow on Earth" is an international institution.
The contest was first staged in Switzerland in 1956, and the UK has participated every year except 1956 and 1958.
But there's one thing an Eurovision synopsis wouldn't be complete without, the one Factor X that is Terry Wogan, he who has been commentating for the television viewers since the early seventies (for the more serious minded amongst you, put your telly on mute and listen to Ken Bruce on Radio 2).

I love Eurovision, and I had always thought it a shame that I would not be likely to hear many of the songs after event.
I really love the entries from Iceland, Germany, Russia (this song is not typically Eurovision, and had many people surprised to see tatu in the contest, yet I feel they performed a very respectable third!), Spain, France, Belgium and Romania.
As I've dared to write this before the contest, two countries seem to stand out to challenge Russia for the #1 spot, and that's Germany and Spain, both with nice, classic uptempo songs.
