In 1928 a second Scot-Still-engined ship, the twin-screw Eurybates, was commissioned with a simpler and, many of us thought, better version of the StilI concept.
I was never a StilI fan, believing that most owners would be frightened off the idea and that improvements in combustion in "ordinary" diesels, supplemented by waste-heat boilers, would before long be just as economical, with advantages in simplicity, first-cost and maintenance.
Of 500bhp per cylinder t had a Still type liner and the rotary valve in the exhaust outlet from each cylinder.

"Eurybates, did you hear something?" Odysseus asked the servant who was standing beside him.
Athena briefly considered shoving her spear up both of their noses, then remembered that Odysseus was her favourite and so decided against it.
Eurybates stood watching it float for a moment, debating whether or not it was worth the risk of trying to reach out and retrieve it.

Notwithstanding, volunteers joined them from Argos to the number of a thousand, under a captain, Eurybates, a man skilled in the pentathlic contests.
Of these men the greater part never returned, but were slain by the Athenians in Aegina.
Eurybates, their captain, fought a number of single combats, and, after killing three men in this way, was himself slain by the fourth, who was a Decelean, named Sophanes.

Moreover, a henchman bare him company, somewhat older than he, and I will tell thee of him too, what manner of man he was.
He was round-shouldered, fl-skinned, and curly-headed, his name Eurybates; and Odysseus honoured him above all his company, because in all things he was like minded with himself.’

The Kitson-Still Steam-Diesel Locomotive.   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-04)
At least one other vessel was fitted with these engines; the Eurybates built in 1928.
Oil from the diesel part of the engine contaminated the boiler feedwater, (this seriously cuts down heat transmission in the boiler), and water contaminated the lubricating oil in the diesel engine crankcase.
It also meant that the two steam cylinders concerned could be, (and were) replaced by conventional diesel cylinders when other economic factors dictated it.

The Greek word for really dark people is melachrones, and the term for wooly is oulocharinos
In other passages dating back much earlier is mention of a African companion in the Odyssey named Eurybates is described in such terms.
Most classicists agree Eurybates is African in origin, and Greeks never reffered to people noticably darker to them such as Phonecians, Arabs, or any other people as melachrones.
