Eurychoromyiidae - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Eurychoromyiidae or Broad-headed Flies are a dipteran family notable only for their extreme rarity.
Schnuse, collecting at Sarampiuni in the foothills of the Bolivian Andes, took 4 specimens, all female, of a fly with a strange broad, flat head.
His judgement has been sustained, and they are now recognised as belonging to a distinct family Eurychoromyiidae.

 Broad-headed Flies
As there is only one genus and one species of Eurychoromyiidae, we have combined the genus and species pages with this family page.
The family is defined by its a) distinctive head shape and structure, b) elongate antennal scape, c) precoxal bridge and d) 4 spermatheca.
As noted by McAlpine (1989) Eurychoromyiidae shares characters 1-11 and c with Celyphidae, but is distinguished from Celyphidae by characters 13-15 and d.

 [No title]
Although previously there were 2 subfamilies, Chamaemyiinae and Cremifanniinae, the latter (not found in the Australasian/Oceanian Regions) has been raised to familial status and placed in another superfamily (Griffiths 1972).
The genus Gayomyia, previously placed in this family provisionally, is treated here under Eurychoromyiidae.
Little is known of immature stages of Australasian/Oceanian species.
