The Eurythmics did not merely tap into the synthesized pop sounds of the 1980s -- they helped to define those sounds.
In a time when pop was beginning its uncomfortable relationship with the synthesizer (and all kinds of unfortunate fusions were emerging) the Eurythmics managed to strike a perfect balance: they brought the cold, contrived electronic sound of pop together with the raw energy and emotion of rock 'n' roll.
After almost a decade of separation, however, the Eurythmics reunited to record 1999's "Peace,” an emotive album that displays the bands full evolution from synthesized pop to soulful, nuanced rock 'n' roll.

Eurythmics : In the Garden - Listen, Review and Buy at ARTISTdirect
Eurythmics' debut album, In the Garden, is the missing link between the work of the Tourists, who included both Dave Stewart and Annie Lennox, and 1983's commercial breakthrough, Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This).
The chief difference is in Lennox's singing; even when the musical bed is appealing, Lennox floats ethereally over it, and the listener doesn't focus on her.
As a result, In the Garden wasn't much of a success, though when Eurythmics streamlined their sound and emphasized Lennox's dominating voice on subsequent releases, they found mass popularity.

 Buy.com - Medusa - Annie Lennox - CD
Eurythmics' Annie Lennox made her solo debut with 1992's lavish, self-descriptive DIVA.
The same sense of tension that made Eurythmics so interesting can be found here: cool synthesizer hooks and repetitive vocal ostinatos pitted against Lennox's soaring vocals, which provides a fascinating dichotomy.
During her early career, the androgynous, smoky-voiced diva was best known as one half of the hugely successful pop duo the Eurythmics.

Visually, the songs are well-represented, and the themes tie together in a loose narrative that defines the different "personalities" and inner experiences of a woman who seems to be going through a bit of a breakdown.
Although the visual story hints at some sort of catharsis, we never really get a concrete idea of what's going on here, which makes "Savage" play more like the collection of videos that it is rather than a real story.
As is usual for Eurythmics, the clips are inventive, diverse, and always showcase the fine songs that Dave and Annie are so good at writing.

The Eurythmics were among the biggest things going in the early/mid 1980s, as new wave synth pop took over pop.
The Eurythmics had the genre down: the over-synthesized drum-machined sounds, the expensive-looking videos, and an '80s spin on the gender-bending glam-rock of the early '70s.

The return of Eurythmics, say Stewart and Lennox, began with a performance at a friend's party.
Starting in 1983 with "Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This)," the title song from their debut album, the pair of one-time lovers became a 1980s New Wave hit factory.
But the Eurythmics came to an abrupt and not-too-friendly end by the beginning of the '90s -- after five albums, countless performances and a professional relationship that survived their romantic breakup.

Preceding the elaborate 2005 reissues of Eurythmics' eight proper albums by a month, The Ultimate Collection narrowly trumps 1991's Greatest Hits since it features remastered sound and a more extensive track list.
Bookending the disc, "I've Got a Life" is powerful disco-pop with Annie Lennox strongly present over a bursting multi-tiered arrangement, while the relatively low-key "Was It Just Another Affair" has more in common with late-period Everything But the Girl.
The rest of the disc leans toward the duo's peak of popularity, 1985's Be Yourself Tonight and the following year's Revenge, while the remainder of the albums -- with the exception of the unrepresented In the Garden, the debut -- chime in with two or three songs each.

For six years, the group was reliable, turning out at least one great single on each album, none of which sounded identical, yet all were recognizable as the work of Dave Stewart and Annie Lennox.

The Eurythmics: Ultimate Collection: one times one review
The Eurythmics managed to overcome the “synth-pop” tag and become one of the most successful duos of the 1980s, certainly in their genre.
Book ending this compilation are two new Eurythmics tracks, “I’ve Got a Life” and “Was It Just Another Love Affair”; the former is a blue-eyed-soul disco number, richly instrumented and lushly textured, while the latter is a slower, keyboard-driven elegy.
As with most compilations, The Ultimate Collection focuses on the commercial high point of the band’s career, namely 1985’s Be Yourself Tonight and 1986’s Revenge, and drawing a satisfactory handful from each of the Eurythmics’ 9 albums (excluding their debut, In the Garden).

Tower Records - The Ultimate Collection * - Eurythmics   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-02)
The Eurythmics were always a singles band, and a set such as this--with indelible hypnotic/robotic grooves like "Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This) alongside the synth-pop melancholia of "Here Comes the Rain Again" and raucous neo-soul like "Would I Lie to You?"--helps one appreciate how much great work the duo produced.
By the late '80s and into the '90s, the Eurythmics sound favored sweeping balladry and smooth, loungy productions (the closer of the set, "Was It Just Another Love Affair?," is a case in point).
There is a fair sampling of that material, but ULTIMATE sticks primarily to the band's mid-'80s peak, showcasing their finest songs, the superb producing and arranging of Dave Stewart, and the exceptional vocals of Annie Lennox.

The Eurythmics are probably the synthpop band, and they're one of the few bands from that era with much staying power.
Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This) is of course the classic Eurythmics album, though you might be best to start with one of the compilations.
The single is called "I Saved the World Today." At first, I thought it was a bit lifeless since it's very orchestrated and ballady.
