Euskal Herritarrok lost half its 14 seats and saw its percentage of the popular vote plunge to about 10 percent, the lowest since Spain re-established monarchy in the late 1970s.
Euskal Herritarrok saw its seats in the regional parliament of these three provinces known as Baskongadak halved to seven from the last election in 1998 while Aznar's party gained only one seat after opinion polls had predicted much stronger gains.
Euskal Herritarrok blamed their loss of votes on the "fear" felt by voters that the Spanish parties might win office.

"Today is a great, happy night for Euskal Herria [the Basque Country]," said Arnaldo Otegi, EH candidate for Gipuzkoa, one of the three provinces that together with Araba and Bizkaia form the Basque Autonomous Community.
Arnaldo Otegi, a leading member of Euskal Herritarrok, stated that the position of the independentist coalition is not to take part in the Basque government, although he explained there would be a possibility of EH collaborating with the institutions.
