The developments are centred around the new metro system by Sir Norman Foster (see Metro Bilbao) and, most of all, the Guggenheim Bilbao Museum by Frank Gehry.
A new tram (EuskoTran) was introduced in 2002.
The Port of Bilbao, formerly on the river, has been moved and expanded downstream on the Bay of Biscay, opening a great deal of central real estate on the river that has been the site of most of the new building.

Part of the railway and personnel was transferred to line one of Metro Bilbao.
EuskoTran (name derived from EuskoTren and tranvĂ­a, Spanish for tram), with a similar but green logo, runs Tram services, currently only in Bilbao, the system having been restored recently.
EuskoTren also augments its network to some areas unreachable by train by operating Bus links in some parts of the region.

I had checked the official Euskotran website, but much of the route/station information appeared a bit out of date.
Thomas, Euskotran is a street car which runs along the river in Bilbao.
It is sort of a supplement to the more extensive metro system.

Downstairs you'll find the fishmongers, on the 1st floor are meats and cheeses, and while upstairs are the fruits and veggies.
You can return to the Ensanche (new quarter) either via the subway, whose stations were designed by Sir Norman Foster, or the brand new Euskotran tram, which will take you directly back to the Guggenheim and your hotel.
I would suggest contacting Basque Country Tours or Totally Spain regarding a car and driver to tour the countryside.

The first 4.5km section, some of it single-track, runs from Atxuri EuskoTren terminus north alongside the river Nervion and its estuary the Ria de Bilbao, via Plaza Circular (close to Abando, the main RENFE station) and the Guggenheim museum, to terminate temporarily at San Mames, close to the main bus-station.
