Oscar Wilde - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
One of the most successful playwrights of late Victorian London, and one of the greatest celebrities of his day, known for his barbed and clever wit, he suffered a dramatic downfall and was imprisoned after being convicted in a famous trial of "gross indecency" for his homosexuality.
Two films of his life were released in 1960.
At the time homosexuality was still punishable by a jail sentence in the UK and both films were rather cagey in touching on the subject without being explicit about it.

Verity Lambert (born November 27, 1935 in London, England, UK) is a British television and film producer, best known for producing the science-fiction series Doctor Who for the BBC for its first two years, from 1963 to 1965.
She remained as Chief Executive of Euston Films until late 1983, in 1982 also rejoining the staff of parent company Thames Television as Director of Drama, and being given a seat on the company's board.
Her job here was somewhat frustrating as the British film industry was in one of its periodic states of flux, but she did manage to produce some noteworthy features, perhaps the best remembered being the 1986 John Cleese vehicle Clockwise.

 Sweeney, The
The series was created by Ian Kennedy-Martin and produced by Ted Childs for Euston Films (a Thames Television subsidiary) and went out mid-week in prime-time on ITV, the main commercial channel.
The series secured the reputation of Euston Films as a leading production company and created an influential model in Britain not just for crime series on ITV, but for the production of cost-effective, high quality drama in general.
The lean and efficient production operation that Euston had pioneered in The Sweeney, relying on short-term contracts and shooting wholly with 16mm film, has been generally adopted across the industry and, with the exception of soap opera, the great majority of drama projects today are manned by free-lance crews and produced on film.

This film is rarely shown and so it was a treat to watch it the other day.
The first thing you notice is the liberal use of the f-word which probably did the film no favours in the 1970's as the TV series was watched, in the main, by under 15's.
This includes car chases, scraps, extremely non-PC moments, and amusingly comic overtones, especially the odd scene where the bomb squad and sweeney have a booze-up in a hotel knowing that a device is being defused in one of the rooms (an incident that today would plaster the front pages of the newspapers for months afterwards).
