Eutheria   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-06)
Eutheria and Placentalia are terms used to describe major groupings within the animal class of Mammalia.
Eutheria contains the placental mammals and also the nearest ancestors of placental mammals (which are known only from the fossil record).
Both taxons (Eutheria and Metatheria) are united within the supercohort of Theria.

Eutheria - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Eutheria is a taxon (specifically, an infraclass) nearly synonymous with Placentalia, containing the placental mammals and the nearest ancestors of placental mammals (which are known only from the fossil record).
The closest living relatives of the eutheres are part of the subclass Marsupialia.
When Eutheria was introduced by Thomas Henry Huxley in 1880, he meant for it to be more broad in definition than its precursor Placentalia.

Prototheria - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
However, Prototheria is often used in contrast to the two other subclasses, Marsupialia and Placentalia (or, in more modern scientific terms, Metatheria and Eutheria).
These three subclasses; Prototheria, Metatheria, and Eutheria; mean "first beast", "intermediary beast", and "true beast".
Metatheria and Eutheria are often grouped as magnorders of the subclass Theria.

Hierarchies   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-06)
Eutheria is the clade that includes the eutherian ancestor and all its descendents (including humans and mice).
Likewise, Eutheria and Metatheria are children of Mammalia.
Siblings Eutheria and Metatheria are each subgroups of more inclusive groupings such as Mammalia, the common ancester of which is believed to have had fur and mammory glands.

The states in the hypothetical ancestors of Theria, Metatheria, and Eutheria were inferred with the maximum parsimony algorithm.
Derived states of the ankle of Eutheria are fewer, and the hypothetical ancestors of Metatheria and Eutheria turn out to be more similar to each other than previously suspected.
