  Colorado rare earth pegmatites
A small group of pegmatites in Chaffee and Fremont Counties, Colorado, is characterized by the association of fluorite with the rare earth minerals euxenite monazite allanite, and gadolinite.
Both monazite and euxenite replace and vein the white plagioclase (calcic albite to sodic oligoclase) and are themselves veined and corroded by white fluorite, red albite, and an unidentified soft yellow-gray mineral.
The monazite, which appears to be slightly older than the euxenite, is associated with a few small blebs of gadolinite and is cut by minute veinlets of apatite as well as specular hematite.

Mineral description : Euxenite   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-21)
The element was later discovered by Lars Nilson in 1878 in the minerals euxenite and gadolinite, which had not yet been found anywhere except in Scandinavia.
By processing 10 kg of euxenite and other residues of rare-earth minerals, Nilson was able to prepare about 2g of highly pure scandium oxide.
Euxenite was first described in 1870 by Scheerer.

Dysprosium: Occurrence   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-21)
Dysprosium is the most abundant of the heavier (yttrium group) lanthanide elements and is approximately as abundant as arsenic, hafnium and uranium.
Euxenite is found in Australia, Brazil, Canada, Finland, Madagascar, Norway and USA.
Since it is processed commercially for uranium, thorium and yttrium, euxenite is a prime source of dysprosium.

Euxenite or euxenite-Y is a brownish fl (Solid homogeneous inorganic substances occurring in nature having a definite chemical composition) mineral with a metallic (A surface coating for ceramics or porcelain) luster, found in (A constitutional monarchy in northern Europe on the western side of the Scandinavian Peninsula; achieved independence from Sweden in 1905) Norway.
It occurs in (A form of igneous rock consisting of extremely coarse granite resulting from the crystallization of magma rich in rare elements) pegmatites and (Click link for more info and facts about fl sand) fl sands.

 euxenite --  Encyclopædia Britannica
Titanium replaces niobium–tantalum in the molecular structure to form the similar mineral polycrase; both it and euxenite often contain rare earths.
Because many of erbium's compounds are beautifully pastel-colored, it is used to make infrared-absorbing glass and as an activator in phosphorescent materials.
It is found in minerals xenotime and euxenite and in the products of nuclear fission.

Euxenite is an uncommon mineral found in complex granitic pegmatites.
MARATHON COUNTY: Euxenite-Y occurs "abundantly" as crystal clusters and masses several centimeters long in a pegmatite at the the Red Rock Granite North Pit along Spring Brook Road, near the interestion with Hghway 107, south of Marathon City.
WAUPACA COUNTY: Euxenite- (Y) occurs as small yellow-brown crystals from road cuts in pegmatite cutting granite along County G near Keller Lake, NE of Big Falls.

Thulium: Occurrence   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-21)
The most important sources of thulium are the minerals rich yttrium: xenotime, gadolinite, euxenite, samarskite, fergusonite, blomstrandine, loparite and yttroparisite.
Euxenite occurs in Finland, Brazil, Norway, Australia, Madagascar, North Carolina and Idaho.
Euxenite is also an important thulium source due to its role in the uranium, thorium and yttrium extraction.

Euxenite and priorite are considered as 2 minerals of varying compositions, containing Y, Nb, Ti, and O; in addition, rare earths, Th, U, Ca, and Fe may also be present in form of isomorphous admixtures.
The artificial priorite was prepared by a hydrothermal method at 350 deg C, transforming the equivalent oxides into the hydroxide form; the artificial euxenite was prepared by calcining, as mentioned above.
There are natural euxenites with Th> U content and priorites with U > Th content.

Nuclear Decommissioning - Lowman Processing Facility
Common heavy mineral grains in the placers are ilmenite, magnetite, and garnet with lesser amounts of the uranium- and rare-earth minerals columbite, euxenite, and monazite and minor amounts of other opaque, radioactive, rare-earth minerals.
At one locality in upper Bear Valley in the late 1950s, placers that contained euxenite as the predominant radioactive mineral were mined for uranium, rare earths, and associated heavy-mineral products.
On average, about one-half pound of euxenite mineral grains was recovered per cubic yard of gravel material that was dredged.

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, and in addition to pink and blue tourmaline crystals the size of your arm, many PIGs will appreciate this photo from Mark Jacobson, presently in Western Australia.
This very fine crystal of euxenite is from the Calcaling pegmatite, in a pegmatite field (newly recognized as NYF-type) named Mukinbudin, Western Australia.
The euxenite crystal is 2 cm tall by 0.8 cm wide.

As a guide we had Ingemar Johansson and he really impressed me. When we walked away from the dump pile he dived in between some rocks and hauled up a rock full of monazite crystals.
There was also some euxenite in the rock, but it was easier to divide because few wanted something to do with radioactive material.
The euxenite lies in the border between feldspar and the mica.
