EvDO, a new Wireless High-Speed Technology
EvDO provides wireless data connections that are 10 times as fast as a regular modem.
Proponents say EvDO offers huge advantages over WiFi, another wireless data technology that is popping up around the country in hotel lobbies and coffee shops, and that it may even be the long sought path around local telephone and cable companies' lock on the high-speed Internet market in most residential areas.
EvDO would require wireless companies to spend billions of dollars to buy additional spectrum and update every cell tower in their networks with new software.

 What is EVDO?
EVDO is an advanced CDMA technology developed by Qualcomm to deal with this limitation.
Qualcomm has produced impressive demonstrations of EVDO's capabilities; in one, a video conference was conducted with a participant traveling in a car at 60 miles per hour (96 km/hour).
The major EVDO deployments in the US are by Verizon and Sprint, and there is also a large network in Korea.

EVDO (pronounced as individual letters), or sometimes called DO for short, set the standard for wireless broadband networking by delivering speeds that are comparable to the wired broadband we use at home and work.
EVDO dates back to 1999, when QUALCOMM developed the initial design of 1xEVDO (or EVDO for short) in order to meet IMT-2000 (International Mobile Telecommunications 2000) requirements for a method of stationary communications with downlink speeds greater than 2Mbps (megabits per second).
With all of the possibilities for using EVDO, it will be exciting to see how technology such as EVDO changes the ways in which we conduct business and connect with friends and family.

Everyone knew the day would come: Verizon is testing Nortel ‘s EVDO Rev. A equipment, which would be a relatively simple upgrade from the Rev. 0 gear that they and Sprint Nextel use today.
The EVDO Rev B speed boost can be accomplished by bonding 1.25 MHz channels, the current 1x channel width, in agglomerations of up 15 or 20 MHz total which would allow 73.5 Mbps downlinks.
The revision to the EVDO standard might be available within two years: The technology binds together many more channels, which means it’s more spectrum-intensive on the operator, according to the details provided in this article.

PCWorld.com - How We Tested Verizon's EvDO Service
In our March 2006 feature, "Broadband to Go," we performed a series of tests on Verizon's BroadbandAccess EvDO service in order to gauge the advantages of this cellular data network over other forms of wired and wireless broadband Internet service.
In addition to these tests, we evaluated dialing (not included in our final scorecard), as follows: The EvDO service requires users to install "dialing" software onto their computers, which users must run in order to connect to the service.
EVDO thus works much like a wired DSL connection that requires a user to run PPPoE dialer software.

Blogarithms » Thinking EVDO   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-03)
I’m hearing good things about EVDO, but I’m concerned about two things: (1) Verizon appears to limit the data usage, making MP3s and videos over EVDO impractical, and (2) support for my G4 PowerBook (1.67GHz) appears to be limited.
I recently made the switch from Sprint’s EVDO (which worked well, generally) to T-Mobile’s EDGE and a BlackBerry and have a similar frustration with the tethering situation.
Considering the EVDO service is $40/month with either, $40-50 towards the bounty sure seems worthwhile to me. I hope you’ll decide to join in.

Gearlog : First Wi-Fi to EVDO Router Introduced
In an unusual twist, Top Global has introduced a Wi-Fi router/gateway that uses 3G EVDO wireless as a backhaul, for rural areas without access to a wired ISP.
"3G EVDO wireless does not need a wired line for backhaul, so it eliminates the needs of infrastructure construction and is ideal for somewhere which does not have [a] wired line," said Jeffrey Tan, manager of product marketing for the company, in an email.
If you are in a place without a wired infrastructure this Wi-Fi to EVDO makes a lot of sense (Top Mobile's real name is China Top Mobile and I'd imagine this is as much for domestic use as export).

 Verizon Wireless EVDO Network Review
Verizon Wireless is able to maintain a high level of bandwidth for each user of the EVDO network by using technology that is similar, in concept, to token ring.
EVDO's other advantage, compared to 1xRTT, is that it does not have to contend with voice traffic; EVDO is intended solely for data traffic while 1xRTT shares the network with cellular voice traffic which causes throughput for 1xRTT to plummet during times of peak voice usage.
Roaming from EVDO to 1xRTT takes around 8 seconds, which poses a problem for applications that cannot tolerate periods of loss of network connectivity.

 Verizon VoIP over EVDO
In my Vonage over EVDO blog I discussed how someone was able to make a VoIP call using Vonage over a high-speed EVDO connection.
I also wondered how happy the cellular companies would be knowing that they are carrying voice over their data connection for the cost of a "monthly flat rate" data connection and thus no minutes used.
My question still is, "Why wouldn't a user simply play for the flat rate EVDO data connection and then use a third-party VoIP provider instead of their cellular carrier?" For instance, if you use Skype over EVDO you could essentially make Skype-to-Skype calls for "free" over Verizon's EVDO data connection.
