Jessye saw a similar rhythm in spoken word, and began writing poetry at an early age.
Jessye believed African Americans should have the choice to experience the creative sounds of the many talented jazz musicians and, at the same time, be encouraged to retain their ethnic musical roots.
Eva Jessye, the "grand dame of Black music in America," died in 1992 though her spirit lives on through the music and poetry she created.

Jessye was born in Coffeyville, Kansas on January 20, 1895.
Most of Jessye's materials center on her work in George Gershwin's opera "Porgy and Bess." Being selected the unofficial music director, Jessye talks with Professor Standifer about how she got the job, and how she help authenticate the Afro-Americanism in the choral work of the productions.
Jessye acted as an adviser for the BBC's For the Children: Huckleberry Finn and Down in the Valley (1952) and performed in the 1959 Hallmark Hall of Fame production of "Kiss Me Kate." In 1963, her choir was designated the official chorus of Martin Luther King's civil rights march on Washington, DC.

Jessye taught in elementary schools in Taft, Haskell, and Muskogee, Oklahoma before she became a reporter and columnist for the Baltimore (Maryland) Afro-American in 1925.
She established the Eva Jessye Collection at Pittsburg State University in Pittsburg, Kansas in 1977 and served as that University's Artist-In-Residence from 1978 to 1981.
Eva Jessye died on February 21, 1992 at the age of 97 in Ann Arbor, Michigan.

Eva Jessye (January 20, 1895, Coffeyville, Kansas—February 21, 1992, Ann Arbor, Michigan)—the first fl woman to receive international distinction as a professional choral conductor.
In 1926 she began to perform regularly with her choir, the Eva Jessye Singers, who were originally called the Dixie Jubilee Singers.
Further, Jessye composed her own pieces, including her folk oratorio Paradise Lost and Regained (1934), The Life of Christ in Negro Spirituals (1931), and The Chronicle of Job (1936).

In a personal note, Robeson indicated two of her arrangements would be used in his future performances.
In My Spirituals Jessye wrote, "'On Jerdon's Stormy Bank I Stand' is a baptismal song common to all sections of the country but in this particular locality, [the Verdigris River in southeast Kansas] 'March Down to Jerdon,' was just as often used.
