  HawaiiNews.com: UH president Dobelle fired
University of Hawaii President Evan Dobelle was fired late yesterday by the UH Board of Regents in a unanimous decision that followed 12 hours of discussion as part of Dobelle's three-year evaluation.
Dobelle was on the Mainland on vacation, touring colleges with his son Harry, when the regents' decision was announced.
Although rumors of Dobelle's possible dismissal were reported by the Star-Bulletin on Sunday — anonymously quoting "several regents" — the move still took many by surprise.

In Dobelle's two years, we see an institution where student tuition is being raised while administrative salaries are boosted by more than $4 million, where substance and services take a back seat to marketing and public relations, and where a globe-trotting president fails to bring home the money he promised.
Dobelle is disrespectful of the regents, ignoring their counsel and failing to work cooperatively with the entire board, exceeding his delegated authority, displaying poor judgment, failing to follow through on commitments, and failing to be a proper steward of our university's limited financial and human resources.
Dobelle's own initial salary of $442,000, approved by the regents, was nearly triple that of his predecessor, Kenneth Mortimer, and, with benefits, was ranked fourth highest in the nation in a survey of university presidents by the Chronicle of Higher Education.

 National CrossTalk -- Vol. 11 / No. 4 -- Fall 2003
Evan Dobelle began his public life as the 27-year-old self-described "kid mayor" of Pittsfield, Massachusetts, and later served as White House chief of protocol under President Jimmy Carter, so it's not surprising that he frames university presidencies in political terms.
Dobelle, who is fond of saying that he throws his figurative hat over the wall just to motivate himself to climb over and get it, wasted no time raising those eyebrows further with his signature bold, idealistic statements and ambitious, imaginative goals.
Dobelle dismisses the essay as a desperate attempt to derail change, and maintains that it is the sort of resistance he anticipated at this stage-a stage, he predicted, that eventually will be forgotten when his tenure is "romanticized" after he achieves his agenda.

Dobelle gained the distinction of being not only the highest paid University president in Hawaii history, and the highest paid public employee in the state, but one of the highest paid college presidents in the nation.
Dobelle was called before the Hawaii State Legislature in 2002, 2003 and 2004 and questioned as to why he did not raise $150 million as promised from private sources to expand the University’s medical school.
Dobelle could still be forced to pay back this $72,000 if he cannot produce evidence the money was spent on University-related business, sources within the University say, although the foundation maintains Dobelle did provide sufficient documentation to include the $72,000 as business related expenses.
