 Evangelical Church
As a proper name with strictly limited meaning the designation "Evangelical Church" applies to a branch of the Protestant Church in Germany, formed in 1817 at the instance of King Frederick William III of Prussia, by a union of the Lutheran and the Reformed Churches.
Considering himself the protector and leader of the Church in Germany he endeavoured to raise it from degradation by forcing unity upon it with a strong hand; unity not in dogma, for he disliked theologians "who pretend to be more Christian than Christ", but in liturgy, wherein his sincere piety found sufficient satisfaction.
In the Evangelical Church — we cannot deny it — an orthodoxy has found a footing which is in contradiction with the fundamental idea of the Union, and which has hypocrites in its train.

Theological Declaration of Barmen, The -- Global Library Online
In opposition to attempts to establish the unity of the German Evangelical Church by means of false doctrine, by the use of force and insincere practices, the Confessional Synod insists that the unity of the Evangelical Churches in Germany can come only from the Word of God in faith through the Holy Spirit.
We, the representatives of Lutheran, Reformed, and United Churches, of free synods, Church assemblies, and parish organizations united in the Confessional Synod of the German Evangelical Church, declare that we stand together on the ground of the German Evangelical Church as a federation of German Confessional Churches.
This threat consists in the fact that the theological basis, in which the German Evangelical Church is united, has been continually and systematically thwarted and rendered ineffective by alien principles, on the part of the leaders and spokesmen of the "German Christians" as well as on the part of the Church administration.

Ministers, church boards and church authorities must come to an agreement, where necessary, about the form of common life which is compatible with the ordained ministry, in this case about a single-sex partnership; but to go beyond that limit would be to violate the sphere of intimacy and the sense of tact.
With regard to sister churches in the ecumenical context with which no full church fellowship exists there is, however, also the need to make clear to what extent the admission of individual practising homosexuals is justified by Scripture and the Confessions as the bases of Protestant doctrine.

Enter the church now and fill the vacuum of indifference GENEVA, 23 November 1998 (epd/lwi) - In the face of a decrease in membership in the 24 German Landeskirchen, which make up the Evangelical Church in Germany (EKD), the Council Chairman Manfred Kock is calling on Christians to join the church now.
Diakonia, it is said, is the "outstretched hand of the church in society." The agency's 450,000 employees and 400,000 volunteers could mean a strengthening of individual initiatives, social networks and volunteer services.

BIELEFELD, Germany — The Evangelical Church in Germany (EKD), Germany’s main Protestant body, and the main Protestant social-service organization are to contribute 10 million Deutschmarks (U.S.$4.7 million) to a compensation fund launched July 20 for forced laborers brought to Germany during the Nazi era.
The Roman Catholic Church in Germany has declined to contribute to the fund, and has stated that there is no evidence that forced laborers were used in Catholic institutions.
But according to Hausler, it is possible that the church and many Germans did not believe the system of foreign workers was wrong, thinking that it was a normal part of day-to-day life during the war, helping to overcome the labor shortage — a belief that persisted until the 1990s.
