Membership in the Evangelical Church of the Augsburg Confession in Austria decreased by 3.7 percent to 322,321 members, whereas that of the Evangelical Church of the Augsburg Confession in Romania fell by around three percent, to 14,606 members.
The Evangelical Lutheran Free Church in Germany, not an LWF member church, recorded the highest decline in percentage terms with 26 percent less members, reducing the total to 1,470.
Among other churches that recorded a decline was the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Brunswick, with 417,576 members, a decrease of 2.2 percent.

George Anderson, presiding bishop of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) and a vice president of the Lutheran World Federation (LWF), will be among church representatives from around the world assembling Oct. 31 in Augsburg, Germany, to sign the "Joint Declaration on the Doctrine of Justification," an historic agreement with the Roman Catholic Church.
With the major issue -- over which the two churches "damned" each other in the 16th century -- taken care of, Lutherans and Roman Catholics are able to tackle the remaining list of issues, said the Rev. Daniel F. Martensen, director of the ELCA Department for Ecumenical Affairs.
Augsburg is important to the Lutheran tradition because in 1530 Emperor Charles V assembled a conference of Luther's followers to draft a statement outlining the beliefs and practices of the churches in Germany.

According to the Brunswick bishop, Protestant churches have a particular need to discuss anew the meaning of the office of bishop in an ecumenical context.

The Church, on the contrary, is for Kasper eschatological in the sense that it must activate that which it already is potentially: “It is on a journey,” the cardinal affirms, “towards fully and concretely realizing its nature in life.” The Church is already Catholic, but not yet fully so.

Bishop emeritus Dr Christian Krause of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Brunswick, Germany was elected LWF President in 1997 by the LWF Ninth Assembly, which took place in Hong Kong, China, serving to the 2003 Tenth Assembly in Winnipeg, Canada.
Until his appointment as bishop in 1994, Dr. Krause was General Secretary of the German Protestant Church Assembly (Kirchentag).
Dr. Krause resigned as bishop of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Brunswick in January 2002.
