Oldenburg promptly named his chief rival for the office, the Rev. James E. Mead of Tacoma, Washington, a passionately conservative evangelical pastor, to be the Assembly's vice moderator.
Oldenburg and Mead said they were going to model for the church how two persons with considerably different theological views can nevertheless demonstrate unity in their desire to serve and bring unity to the whole church.
The report calls for the church to commit more resources to the development of new racial ethnic congregations, to the education and training of racial ethnic pastors and lay leaders, and to the streamlining of processes whereby racial ethnic fellowship groups may garner pastoral leadership and be formally organized as congregations.
