Evangelion (mecha) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In the anime/manga series Neon Genesis Evangelion, Evangelions, or simply Evas, are the mechas piloted by the children chosen by NERV.
Evangelion Unit 02 is piloted by Asuka Langley Sohryu and is the first Evangelion built specifically for combat; the first Production Model, made by NERV Germany.
These Evangelion units appear in The End of Evangelion and were produced at seven different NERV branches around the world, probably Germany (Third Branch), the United States (First Branch, Massachusetts), Japan (Matsushiro), the United Kingdom, France, Russia, and China.

Mecha - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The distinction between smaller mecha and their smaller cousins (and likely progenitors), the powered armor suits, is blurred; according to one definition, a mecha is piloted while a powered armor is worn.
Mecha's proponents believe that its mobility would be superior to a tank because, using humans as the model, a mecha would be a able to traverse a variety of terrain where a tracked vehicle would be rendered immobile or be forced to seek an alternative (and potentially more dangerous) route.
The size of such a mecha would enable it to carry heavy weapons such as a chaingun that would otherwise be unavailable to an infantry squad, yet its legs would allow it to maneuver more freely than a tank in the close confines of an urban environment.

Neon Genesis Evangelion - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The meaning of The End of Evangelion is ambiguous, and it is not clear if it is intended to expand on the events of episodes 25 and 26 of the series (meaning that those episodes reflected Shinji's point of view while inside the merged being), or completely replace them.
Evangelion however changed this with its fast and sleek Evas, making a noticeable contrast to the comparatively bulky and cumbersome looking Patlabors and Transformers of the past.
In the series, even the mecha Evangelion units turn out not to be machines at all; Unit 01 moves without a driver to protect Shinji, and it can fight without the aid of an external power source when it goes berzerk.

An old favourite - Evangelion is one of the more popular animes, and is quite well known in both Japan and overseas - it consists of a 26-episode long TV series, two movies, and a subsequent manga series, as well as a few games and a lot of soundtracks.
Evangelion is an action/mecha anime, with a bit of human psyche-analysis later in the series.
Evangelion is also a good anime for those starting out - while some series are too japanese-based for a lot of beginning anime watchers, this one does quite well for new and old anime fans alike...

But then...every moment of Evangelion felt that it had meanings in its being so that you are afraid you might miss some very important parts of the plot, albeit a very exciting part.
Whatever the budget and deadlines for the Evangelion production team were, the end result is half a masterpiece that can kill up to 90% of the 10% of the brain you are using (that's why repeated viewings are not recommended).
Neon Genesis Evangelion is the show that defined the 1990's, and took the mecha genre to a whole new level.

Evangelion was important enough for me to search and examine quite a few sources and join the essence of these to write my own translation of the subtitles for the whole series (which took me several months).
This mirrors the fact that Evangelion is decidedly mature: it is a deeply psychological view of the traditional mecha anime, but this shift alone is enough to distinguish it from other anime series (especially at the time, when mecha anime was all about explosions and destruction and very little internal character development).
Evangelion is like a narrative into the breaking of a boy's soul, pointing out moment by moment when Shinji Ikari comes closer and closer to the death of his hope.

Mecha is definitely more than just "giant robots beating each other up", and after this course, you'll have a better understanding and appreciation of just how mecha fits into many of the anime series that we know and love.
Mecha, a term generally used to describe the giant robots and machines that appear in many anime, is one of these mainstays.
Mecha were no longer the "last line of defense" or the only weapon that was used when fighting an enemy - rather, they were part of the fighting force and were utilized as such along with more conventional units such as tanks or planes.

Mecha can mean many things, but for the purposes of this article, let’s define mecha as a term - short for mechanical - that refers to the robots, machines, and cyborgs that permeate anime.
Mecha is a pillar of anime that boasts fervently dedicated fans of its futuristic battle scenes, intricate robot designs, complicated human characters, and dark, dystopian plots.
Evangelion is construed as being everything from a dysfunctional coming-of-age story to a symbol of an economically shattered Japan’s over-reliance on technology.

Is an Evangelion a mecha?   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-02)
A mecha (pl. mecha) is commonly understood as a large humanoid-like robot or mechanical suit which is piloted or at least controlled by humans.
Their primary function, the Human Instrumentality Project, isn't typical to mecha of course, but a primary purpose not related to fighting per se is not unheard of in mecha anime either.
Therefore, in the cultural concept of mecha anime culture, like in a newspaper article discussing it, it is prudent in my opinion to call Evangelions mecha, if not for the sake of clarity.

Evangelion is unprecedented in its level of character development simply because it's less important to understand the characters personality than it is to understand their psychology.
A side note along this line is that in Evangelion a significant number of the main characters have a mental disorder of one kind or another which adds layers of depth to their development.
Evangelion is known for it's absurd amount of detail in every frame especially when it involves invironments, though it must be conceded that this is not always consistent.

Let's look at some of the general features of mecha, which could be considered part of an operational definition of the genre.
Sometimes the relationship is truly familial, as in Evangelion, and the adult inventor-maybe downplayed as a mad scientist-but the relationship is always present.
A common device in mecha stories is for conventional military technology-missiles, tanks, air raids, and so forth-to be sent against the threat to no effect.

This is roughly the worldview for Neon Genesis Evangelion.
Fans and critics alike were often hostile to the move away from the futurist fantasy and mecha elements of the early episodes toward what they deemed self-indulgent psycho-babble.
[18] Neon Genesis Evangelion seems to re-vision the radical and evolutionary transformations of Japanese society during the past two generations, recasting contemporary ruptures in its narrative as historical prediction; the ex eventu prophecy, as John J. Nor does Misato's flippant attitude save her from embarrassment as she runs across a loose-lipped old flame aboard the battleship delivering the newest Evangelion mecha and its loudmouthed, energetic pilot, 14-year-old Asuka Sohryu.
Asuka seems clearly poised to turn all existing relationships inside NERV upside down with her flamboyance, competitiveness, and jealousy, but first she and Shinji are going to have to fight their way past the latest alien invader.
She's a study in unusual characteristics for an woman in anime -- clearly uninterested in anything domestic (she can't cook or clean, and her diet consists of beer, takeout and pre-packaged ramen), uninvolved romantically although the males around Shinji can't stop drooling over her, brave in combat but bored with formality.
