DVD Verdict Review - Neon Genesis Evangelion: Death And Rebirth/The End Of Evangelion Box Set
Evangelion is set in a post-apocalyptic Tokyo, and tells the story of Shinji Ikari, a shy and troubled teenaged boy who is recruited (by his father, the head of a shadowy government agency called NERV) to pilot a giant mecha, called Evangelion, in battle against a series of invading monsters from space, called Angels.

Those that were in for the long haul with the episodes of one of the most successful anime series of all time will remember that the series ended on a very enigmatic note with all sorts of existential connotations thrown around in the at-times bizarre last two episodes.
The broad story is that with the Evangelion programme having progressed as far as self-awareness for the Eva units, the Instrumentality Project of SEELE is thrown into gear.
Rebirth is basically filling in some of the more confusing aspects of Shinji Ikari's descent into madness, whilst also setting up another, more "acceptable" ending in End Of Evangelion.

Yes, "Death" is a recap of the series episodes, but it's really more of a refresher for those who have already seen it than a digest version of events for Eva newbies.
The bulk of "Rebirth" is a violent battle between the Japanese Self-Defense Force soldiers acting at SELEE's behest and the outgunned staff of NERV.
While the real climax to the "Evangelion" saga is in "The End of Evangelion" (which Manga will be releasing on DVD in a few months) and not in "Death" or "Rebirth", the sheer artistry in the animation direction and especially in the characterization on display here is definitely worth seeing.
