Evangelium vitae - Ioannes Paulus PP. II - Enzyklika (1995.03.25)

Evangelium Vitae - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Evangelium Vitæ (Latin: "The Gospel of Life") is the name of the encyclical written by Pope John Paul II which expresses the position of the Catholic Church regarding the value and inviolability of human life.
Rom 2:14-15), is reaffirmed by Sacred Scripture, transmitted by the Tradition of the Church and taught by the ordinary and universal Magisterium.
The current Prefect of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, William Levada, wrote in 1995 that Evangelium Vitae's teaching regarding abortion was an infallible teaching of the ordinary magisterium.

 EVANGELIUM VITAE 73
Number 73 of the Encyclical Evangelium vitae treats the problem of conscience faced by members of a legislative assembly when their vote would be decisive for the passage of a more restrictive law on abortion to replace a more permissive law already in force or coming up for a vote.
The solution given in Evangelium vitae 73 is the application, to a particular problem of conscience, of the general duty to oppose seriously unjust laws and to work, to the extent possible, for their repeal.
Evangelium vitae 73 intends to offer a moral judgment on a specific action, not a general judgment on all actions that might be inspired by the subjective intention of limiting the harm caused by a seriously unjust law.

An Evangelical Appreciation of Evangelium Vitae
(Site not responding. Last check: )
This is, in a rather provocative form, one of the key exhortations of Evangelium Vitae (“Gospel of Life”), that remarkable encyclical from 1995 which aptly illustrates Pope John Paul II’s fervent desire that evangelicals, Orthodox and other Christians begin to embrace their common responsibilities to promote, enrich and defend the sanctity of human life.
Evangelium Vitae is not an argument in abstract; it is a realistic charge for all Christians to fully submit themselves to Savior and thus show the path of redemption to a to a world that has so completely, desperately lost its way.
Evangelium Vitae’s description of the common home where all men live together on the basis of principles of fundamental equality is a striking one.

If Evangelium Vitae is to serve as the guide for the faithful that the Holy Father intended it to be, then Catholics need a clear understanding of what it says and means.
As explained in Evangelium Vitae, the true defense of life requires a more careful analysis of circumstances than is suggested by the seamless garment approach.
Evangelium Vitae includes much that is inconsistent with the seamless garment approach and leaves out key elements in the consistent life ethic.

However, while the majority of the commission ultimately argued that the Church's teaching on this point could and should be changed, a minority resisted on the grounds that the Church could not reverse such a constant and authoritative teaching even if the arguments for it were no longer wholly convincing.
Many in the Church, responding to the cultural ethos of change and protest which were the 1960s and the sense of religious change sweeping the Church in the wake of Vatican II, had already been carried far beyond the bounds of the traditional understanding in their family planning decisions.
He has therefore broadened his appeal to the call in Evangelium Vitae to a sweeping reeducation in human sexuality and pastoral programming across the board with the aim of creating a new "culture of life" in the Church and society (cf.

Catholic Culture : Document Library : The Vatican's Summary of Evangelium vitae
The Vatican released this summary of Evangelium vitae along with the encyclical by Pope John Paul II on March 30, 1995.
From its very title, Evangelium Vitae (The Gospel of Life), the new encyclical of Pope John Paul II demonstrates its highly positive character and its great spiritual thrust.
While realistically countering unprecedented threats to life and the spread of a "culture of death," the primary intention of the papal document is to proclaim the good news of the value and dignity of each human life, of its grandeur and worth, also in its temporal phase.

A New Feminism by Helen Alvaré
In the encyclical letter Evangelium Vitae ("The Gospel of Life"), among the 105 paragraphs so elegantly written by Pope John Paul II, paragraph 99 jumped out and grabbed this pro-life feminist.
According to Evangelium Vitae, the consequences of this are far-reaching.
In Evangelium Vitae, the Pope refers to this when he says that feminism acknowledges and affirms "the true genius of women in every aspect of the life of society." The marks of a new feminism, a Christian feminism in service to life, are distinctive, however.

Pope John Paul II begins Evangelium Vitae by citing the condemnation in Gaudium et Spes of what he calls "crimes and attacks against human life," a condemnation which, he says, "retains all its relevance today":

In his encyclical "Evangelium Vitae" (The Gospel of Life) issued March 25, 1995 after four years of consultations with the world's Roman Catholic bishops, John Paul II wrote that execution is only appropriate "in cases of absolute necessity, in other words, when it would not be possible otherwise to defend society.
Today, however, as a result of steady immprovement in the organization of the penal system, such cases are very rare, if not practically nonexistent." Until this encyclical, the death penalty was viewed as sometimes permissible as a means of protecting society.

One of the charges leveled by that canonized saint’s detractors was that, as Lord Chancellor, he was too quick to impose the death penalty.
I am therefore happy to learn from the canonical experts I have consulted that the position set forth in Evangelium Vitae and in the latest version of the Catholic catechism does not purport to be binding teaching—that is, it need not be accepted by practicing Catholics, though they must give it thoughtful and respectful consideration.
It would be remarkable to think otherwise—that a couple of paragraphs in an encyclical almost entirely devoted not to crime and punishment but to abortion and euthanasia was intended authoritatively to sweep aside (if one could) two thousand years of Christian teaching.
