Gambit - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Usually, the piece sacrificed is a pawn, but there are also gambits sacrificing a bishop or knight, such as the Muzio Gambit (1.e4 e5 2.f4 exf4 3.Nf3 g5 4.Bc4 g4 5.0-0) and Cochrane Gambit (1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nf6 3.Nxe5 d6 4.Nxf7).
A gambit can also be accepted with the intention of returning the material later for a positional advantage, as advocated by Emanuel Lasker.
The word "gambit" was originally applied to chess openings in 1561 by Spanish priest Rúy López de Segura, who was an admirer of Giovanni Gambetto, first chess player to use this kind of subterfuge, in the 12th century.

 The Evans Gambit
The Evans gambit was one of the romantic openings, and one of the most popular openings in the days of Morphy, Andersen and Blackburne.
The Evans Gambit was invented by captain Evans, and probably first played in a tournament in 1824.
Even Steinitz, who believed that every gambit had to be unsound could not refute it; his attempts to do so only made the gambit more popular.

Bb6 {The Evans Gambit is extensively analyzed, and it is pretty safely established that Black may accept the gambit, for by proper defense he can stand the powerful attack and come out a pawn ahead.
In actual play, nevertheless, the gambit is quite frequently declined; the reason for this is that most experts believe that Black obtains a slight advantage without being subjected to a harassing attack.
The game, opened by the latter, was an Evans Gambit Declined, in which Paris was defeated, although it was creditable both to winner and loser.

But, for much of this century, the Evans had fallen into disfavor at the highest levels due in large part, no doubt, to the belief that a pawn in the pocket is worth more than a couple of tempi in development.
There are six brief chapters (or "Parts") which look at the gambit accepted after 4...Bxb4 5 c3 Ba5 6 0-0/d4/Qb3; 5...Be7; 5...Bc5 and 5...Bd6; the gambit declined and unusual early alternatives.
But, bearing in mind the often mind-numbing analytical details of the Evans, this may be a case where more is not necessarily better.

The challenge, made by Steinitz, it will be remembered, was to the effect that he would undertake to play the defence four times in an Evans Gambit in his match with Gunsberg, from a certain point which had at that time been reached in his game against Tschigorin.
Everybody thought it would be a most interesting thing if Gunsberg were to play the Evans gambit against Steinitz to enable the latter to adopt the same defense as in the adjourned cable game against Tschigorin, which he maintains he should win even against the best play.
Everybody expected that when the Evans gambit was played a lively and interesting fight would result, but it was little thought that the struggle would be so short, sharp and decisive, and everybody present gave expression to their appreciation of the victor’s play by offering him their hearty congratulations.

Evans Gambit Revolution - Moody - Chess House
The foundation for the Evans was laid centuries ago with the Guioco (1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.Bc4 Bc5), but the timehonored move order was to meet 4.c3 Nf6 with 5.d4, usually initiating a vain attempt to own the center (d4/e5 pawns) which Black usually avoids with the judicious response to 5.d4 exd4.
White has ways to gain compensation, such as the Moeller Attack, and Soltis points to the game Dzindzicashvili-Karpov, Mazatlan, 1988, as an example of a contemporary game where White managed to draw, but the Moeller Attack is still unclear.
The Evans is a radical shift from remote prospects for ownership of the center to almost guaranteed stewardship of the center at the cost of a wing pawn.

It's funny to see how the Evans Gambit still captures the imagination of modern day players.
Refuting analysis right and left and offering up many new ideas of his own, Rohde has done the Master level chess world a service by cutting through much of the rubbish that other books extolled.
If you're a master-strength player who is thinking about playing the Evans, Rohde's book is a must buy; though the $15.95 price tag for a scant 85 pages will make anyone think twice before they reach for their wallet (with a curse on their lips, no doubt).

Yet the chess mind is not only a chess mind, and other topics, such as philosophy, may appear from time to time.
About six months I gave it up full time for 2 reasons: 1) While it's a lot of fun, I don't really trust white's position in all lines and I believe there are equally if not better positions to play that don't require the constant justification for 1 or more sacrificed pawns.
