There seems to be this perception that in order to ‘get the most out of high school,’ you have to take the most AP classes, when there is actually so much more that can be learned.
Information learned throughout the school years, social habits developed over time and methods of inquiry were utilized and, in some cases, put to the test by this independent project.
The 1997 - 98 school year was spent researching similar programs in other schools, discussing and debating the various merits of these programs and eventually writing a curriculum proposal that we believed would work for the ETHS community.

 High school start times deprive teens of sleep, affect academic performance
Current high school start times deprive adolescents of sleep and force students to perform academically in the early morning, a time of day when they are at their worst, according to a study in the June issue of the journal Pediatrics.
Results from high school senior sleep/wake diaries kept for the study also showed that adolescents lost as much as two hours of sleep per night during the school week, but weekend sleep times during the school year were similar to those in summer.
The study was a collaborative project involving researchers at the Feinberg School of Medicine and the Center for Sleep and Circadian Biology at Northwestern University and faculty, students and parents from Evanston Township High School, Evanston, Ill. The students were advanced placement biology students who helped conduct the study and analyze the collected data.

School districts in the Chicago area are dealing with the law in distinctly different ways--particularly in how aggressively they have informed parents of its provisions.
Over the last decade, the cost of recruiting nearly doubled from $6,500 to $11,600 a recruit as an increasing percentage of high school graduates opted for college and as unemployment rates were relatively low, defense officials said.
Dickell Fonda, an Evanston Township High School parent, said a Navy recruiter called on the telephone last winter and asked to talk to her 17-year-old son.

The Evanston Police Department investigation into this incident determined that a 15 year old male, who is a sophomore at Evanston Township High School, was responsible for telephoning the Evanston Police Department’s 911 Center on October 18th and reporting a bomb would go off at the high school.
The youth made the call to the police department from a cell phone which was stolen from another high school student’s locker.
The Evanston Police Department wishes to thank Evanston Township School District #202 and the administrators and staff of Evanston Township High School for their cooperation both during the actual incident and the investigation that followed.

I actually had two parents in contact with me or others at the school because they go to work, before their kids are off to school.
Not to mention I'm in Martial Arts, Soccer, Grappling, and a service club, while maintaining my high value of a social life (which is important, I don't care what people say about "school always comes first, your social life can wait till you're out of school, that's a load of crap.
We talk about doing it "for the children", but all of the reasons a child is in school before 9 AM have to do with adults - parents, teachers and coaches who want the kids out of the house, in the classroom and able to get in 2-3 hr practices before dinner time.
