The evaporation of water is used for cooling in the "evaporative cooler" or "swamp cooler", a simple household cooling device used in dry, warm climates.
An evaporative cooler is ineffective in hot humid climates since the rate of evaporation slows, and in fact it may simply make a living space more humid.
