Topic: Evarts class destroyer escort

History Of The DE   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-06)
The capability of submarines to interdict their enemy's supply lines and to destroy his ability to wage war was the single reason for the inception of the destroyer escort.
Destroyer escorts customarily went alongside a designated merchant marine or navy tanker in the convoy to fuel, although some preferred to fuel astern of the tanker.
Astern waited another escort ready to move into the fueling position as soon as it was clear and also to act as a rescue ship in case of a man overboard during the hazardous evolution.

When opportunity provided, the destroyer escort could itself fulfill the mission of the destroyer by attacking surface ships with guns and torpedoes and serving as scout ships of the fleet.
The destroyer class of ship came into existence as a weapon against the torpedo boat which itself came about as a cheap weapon against capital ships.
Destroyers also were capable, being larger and more durable than torpedo boats, of serving as scout ships for the fleet.

 DE-5 Evarts class
Given that the fast majority of the ships under production in 1940, especially the destroyers, were intended for fleet work, not for convoy escort, the United States Navy had a clear deficiency in that regard.
The escort vessels of World War I, SCs and "Eagle" boats, had been scrapped or where in such state as to be useless; and certainly, technological progress had rendered them obsolete in any event.
Escort destroyers of this class served in all theaters on general escort duty.

Escort Carriers, the "baby flat-tops," were designated CVE's and the joke was that they were nick-named after their design: "Combustible, Vulnerable, Expendable." CVE's and DE's were regular companions escorting the vulnerable cargo ships.
Evarts class ships were supposed to use eight diesels for 12,000 HP, but shortages of the powerplants caused a redesign for only four diesels and a total of 6,000 HP.
Later classes of the DE were a little wider, longer and deeper, and often had their ballast extended when used in the rough North Atlantic.
