All of that changes when he meets Vicki (Kyra Sedgewick), a dock loader whose persistence leads to sharing Walter's bed.
Bacon is given wonderful support by his real life wife Kyra Sedgewick, in a role that involves full love scenes as well as the love for a wounded individual.
Bacon and Sedgewick's roles are also backed by impressive work from Mos Def (not so nice a guy here), Bratt, Eve and David Alan Grier who makes a memorable impression with just few lines.

  Woodsman, The London Movie Review
Throughout the film Bacon brilliantly captures a man constantly struggling with desires that he knows to be wrong, culminating in the film’s most powerful scene, an encounter with a young girl on a park bench.
The supporting cast are also excellent, particularly Sedgewick, whose hard-bitten exterior gradually reveals a more vulnerable side and Mos Def, whose air of subtle menace makes a memorable impact in a relatively small role.
Also notable are David Alan Grier, as the lumber yard boss and hip-hop star Eve in a splendidly bitchy turn as a gossipy colleague who feels she’s been slighted by Walter.

DVD Verdict Review - The Lady Eve: Criterion Collection
To the chagrin of his father (Eugene Pallette), Charles is sent reeling, literally, by Eve's presence and her remarkable resemblance to Jean Harrington.
The Lady Eve is interesting because it ditches one of the most fundamental conventions of the genre: screwball comedies generally present us with romantic leads who are intellectual equals, well-matched opponents, a novelty back in the 1930s and '40s.
The Lady Eve is high-brow and low-brow, sophisticated and silly.

Charles is himself so smitten by this enticing and experienced temptress that nothing about her full-court pursuit, even her disguise as the British aristocrat Lady Eve Sedgewick, comes across as either brutal or belligerent.
Even when Jean corrals him into marriage, and then, on second thought, tries to scare him off by detailing all her prior paramours, one is assumes that these two are meant to be a couple.
The mirror shot in The Lady Eve, where Jean observes a stateroom full of women virtually throwing themselves at Charles, is a dazzling use of space.

 theunshaven: The more things change
The article is admittedly written for an American context, but I'm going to repeat a particular section of it because I think it is rather topical both for modern America and modern New Zealand.
Admittedly this is an article that is more than ten years old, and it's worth noting that Sedgewick is more focused on the fates of queer adolescents denied information and forced to conform than on the wider syndrome of abstinence programs and what they wreak.
It also means, for example, that we have NO IDEA as to causes of youth suicide, like the whole Sedgewick statistics regarding gay youth suicide.

Epistemology of the Closet (1990) - Eve Kosofsky Sedgwick
Since the late 1980s, queer studies and theory have become vital to the intellectual life of the U.S. This has been, to no small degree, due to the popularity of Eve Kosofsky Sedgwick's critically acclaimed Epistemology of the Closet.
Working from classic texts of European and American writers--including Herman Melville, Henry James, Marcel Proust, and Oscar Wilde--Sedgwick delineates a historical moment in which sexual identity became as important a demarcation of personhood as gender had been for centuries.

 Homosocial Warfighting and Espionage
Dear Nathan - the word homosocial refers to an idea which originated, as far as I know, in the work of Eve Kososfsky Sedgewick.
She has written about how men trade women for power under the guise of heterosexual interest; she claims that that hetero desire is a ruse that men use to bargain and jockey for power; any power and any discourse requires the trading of the weaker members of the social structures of patriarchy.
Sedgewick, so far as I know, first used this term and possibly introduced it to literary criticism and academic writings as well as political talk on the streets.

What does Barry mean when he says that thinking of gender identity as performance “opens the way to a ‘postmodernist’ notion of identity as a constant switching among a range of different roles and positions drawn from a kind of limitless data bank of potentialities”?
What does Sedgewick mean when she says that the “emerging pattern of male friendship, mentorship, entitlement, rivalry, and hetero- and homosexuality was in an intimate and shifting relation to class; and that no element of that pattern can be understood outside of its relation to women and the gender system as a whole” (2435).
From the vantage point of our own society, at any rate, it has apparently been impossible to imagine a form of patriarchy that was not homophobic” (2437).

A variety of texts will be chosen - from Jeanette Winterson, Manuel Puig, Paul Monette, Edmund White, classic Hollywood and New Queer Cinema to the formation of the commercial gay ‘scene’ - to demonstrate methods of queer interpretation.

This is a pioneering book, with essays by Eve Sedgewick, Henry L. Gates, and Michael Warner, among others, the first to push gay identity politics beyond its limitations within "gay and lesbian studies" and into social, economic, and transcultural theory.
It is indeed "planetary" in its attempt to take gay and lesbian theory past the blindness of American identity niche-marketing and and fashion magazine triumphalism.

Depicting Walter as a relatively non-verbal and inarticulate character, meant that pressure was on Bacon to give a performance that did not rely on dialogue, especially since he plays a character that audiences would normally find repellant.
In support is a superb cast including Kyra Sedgewick (in reality Bacon's wife) as a tough-talking woman who tries not to judge Walter for his past; the hip-hop performer, Mos Def, as an intimidating local policeman; Benjamin Bratt as a member of Walter's family; and Eve, another hip-hop artist, in a small role.
