The event is held on the nearest school day to July 17, to mark the birthday of Eve van Grafhorst, the first Australian child to be infected by HIV through a blood transfusion in the mid 1980's.
Eve and her family were so reviled and stigmatised because of her HIV status that they were forced to flee for sanctuary to New Zealand where Eve was to die as an 11 year old in 1993.
Eve was the inspiration for the establishment of the Australian AIDS Fund, an AIDS-care charity that was to become an agency member of Catholic Social Services Victoria.

Eve van Grafhorst contracted the virus after her birth in 1982, when she received a blood transfusion.
The van Grafhorsts finally moved to New Zealand and, although the town of Kincumber publicly apologized for its behavior, remained there.

Will the Government contact Eve's mother and make a generous, emergency, ex-gratia payment for little Eve and her parents so that she can have some peace and security in the last months of her life, if possible with her family and friends in New South Wales?
In defining the eligibility categories I recognised that there were people who had left New South Wales - some to live in other countries or in other States - in order to obtain a better lifestyle or to be closer to medical assistance.
Because of the expansion of that category, Eve and her family would be entitled to make an application for assistance.

In 1984 when HIV/AIDS was first detected in Australia, Health Minister Neal Bluett led the country with a bipartisan approach to the encroaching epidemic.
While there was some mild panic and some unexpected overreaction (Eve Van Grafhorst was hounded from her school on the Central Coast), there was a great education program and terrific support for the networks that were being established, such as the AIDS Councils.
For at least 10 years, getting HIV was considered a death sentence and attending funerals became part of the social calendar of the gay community.

I remember the story of a little girl with HIV in Australia who was told she could only play with the other children at her kindergarten if she wore a plastic visor that covered her face.
New Zealander's wouldn't have a bar of it and opened their hearts to little Eve van Grafhorst.
Funnily enough, I cannot recall anyone being accused of being politically correct for wanting to help this little girl.

The recipient in 1992 was Eve van Grafhorst whose courage while living with HIV was inspiring to all who met her.
